I picked up Surfing in 1987 after I heard it on the radio in college and the album didn't have any photos. I thought "who is this guy with this beautifully strange album cover and incredible chops and sound?" I think I first saw him on Dreaming #11 CD soon after.

Had heard hm on NOTE and SWTA but had never actually saw him until he and Steve Vai shared the cover of Guitar world (i think) magazine in around 1990... I thought, shit thats what he looks like!!
Powerslave214 - March 19, 2006 06:37 PM (GMT)
I think the first time I became aware of Satch was the "Satch Boogie" video on MTV waaaay back in the day.

Being a hardcore Purple fan, i heard that Satch took over from Blackmore when he buggerd off from them on tour, so Satch filled in for him til Steve Morse came to deep purple. Also my dad had bought the G3 video, as he liked Eric Johnson. I sat down watched it, and became a fan of all 3 instantly  FIABD blew me away, and ive never looked back since :rock2:

my brother first turned me on to satch a few years ago when he showed me crushing day. it was an awesome song, the first satch song i'd heard. then i got the G3 Live In Denver DVD and was hooked on satch and suddenly vai too. that's what influenced me to start playing guitar :P .

First time i saw him was on TV, the video was Summer song, i was about 15 years old i guess, and when i saw this cool car races, crashing each other and that powerwull music sound trackin it, i was like "WOOOOW WHO'S THIS GUYS, HE IS FREAKING AMAZIN" and in the end of the video they show the display with the name of the song and performer.
Remember the Name of the song was easy, but, the name of the guy playin it, at first wasn't so easy as i thought, as i haven't anything to write down the name so i can go to a music store and buy any cd of thsis amazin guy.
HAHA So in order to remember the guys name, i realize that if i remember the name of the Friends Tv Show Character, Joey Tribiani, i will then remember the name of this guy, this simply guy who plays amazing music on his Guitar, Joe Satriani. hahah
so i went quickly to the music store thinkin "Joey Tribiani = Joe Satriani, Joey tribiani = Joe satriani" hahaha
When i get to the Music store there was only 1 cd available, and was the 1996 G3 Jam, but in the cover didnt know who was Satriani...
i thought to myself, "well, the guy in the middle (Eric Johnson) i am sure he's not, now the baldy man either, cause in the video he has long hair, and this has no hair at all, it must be the 3rd one (Steve Vai)" hahaha
Thats my story guys
hahaha
hopes you like it

I was all into Eddie (Van Halen) till someone told me that the Top Gun song came from a guy called Joe S, the proof came with the magazine.
(not :) )
So basically I discovered Joe's talent with a big lie :)
Crystal Planet really shocked me, and i've been hooked to his music from that day on. Addicted is more appropriate. There isn't a day without his music in my life.

6 years ago, i asked my guitar teacher (i was 11) to teach me a really cool song that will challenge me but at the same time be enjoyable to learn. he showed me always.... and i learnt it and loved it. my cousin then showed me some of his other stuff...surfin and so on
Then i was in a cd shop a few weeks later and i saw the joe satriani - an anthology cd and decided to buy. it was the best cd ever!!!i listened to it a zillion times.
so yeh thats about it, i found out about satch from my guitar teacher
Mike_Muse_Rage - May 3, 2008 12:18 PM (GMT)
He was in a lot of the guitar magazines I used to read; I figured I should see what the fuss was all about!

When I was ten, the Mario bros movie came out and as my brothers birthday wasn't long after that, my dad bought him the sound track. The first track on there was the speed of light. I listened to track a hundred times, even though I wasn't into music much
back then. About 8 years after that I went looking for some new music and saw Joe's name and bought time machine figuring a double disc is the best way to see if I liked the guy or not. I enjoyed all the tracks on there, never having herd anything like it before. But I nearly fell over when speed of light came on. I then did a lot catching up with my CD collection.
Mike_Muse_Rage - May 9, 2008 10:37 PM (GMT)
^ Wow, Time Machine must have been an odd introduction to Satch!
myself - May 10, 2008 12:28 AM (GMT)
The second disc was almost a live best of album, featuring some of his best writing. The first disc shows how experimental he can be. I was into metallica and creed at the time and wanted to find something a bit different. Joe turned out to be Very different. :D
seppe_sai - May 12, 2008 03:32 AM (GMT)
i saw him playing always with me ... in the expo sevilla '92, i thought that he was a hiper metl player (i hated those players) but when i saw him i wanted to have some of his music...he also played midnight, oh hell, it was so revealing!! i didnt know what my guitar was for before of watching him...xD
couple of weeks later i bought the engines of creation and a day after, JS album
punchingboy - May 12, 2008 09:19 PM (GMT)
First time I saw him was in a guitar magazine years ago. Around when Surfing was being released. Most likely first heard of him through a Vai interview.
