Does anyone have an idea at what thype of guitar tone Joe is using in The Track Up In The Sky on the Crystal Planet album. Is he using a Distortion Pedal or Just the Distortion on the His amp. Also what effect is that on the Guitar....Rock on

Well, the solo, as I recall, is played with an octave pedal. His tone is probably a DS-1 driving something marshall-y, and I remember reading an interview saying he played the melody up around the 12th position starting on the low E because he liked the extra grit it gave it, and then just EQ'd out a little of the extra bass to make it sit in the mix better. Most tabs I've seen put it in around the 7th position.

Yeah I noticed that with alot of the tabs in that they have the notes around the 7th Postion when in fact itīs played in the 12th Position.I just Love the tone of his guitar during the Melody,it sounds like therīs some sort of Phase or flanger effect to give it the un-earthly feel to it.Great Song

Luminous Flesh Giants is another song tabbed out on 5th/7th fret when if you watch it being played then its around the 10th/12th.

It sounds it's plaed through some combo, a bit more distortion (wide one no gain) and chorus set to get some sort of phase/modulation effect (you can hear it on the ending during last note that fades, it shifts form time to time because of that phase/modulation trip)
I guess it came through some experimenting :)

That's a bar vibrato at the end, dude. ;)

R you shure? I could sware that it was periodical?
Anyway I'm pritty shure it's chorus and not phaser effect pedal.

I remember reading the interview where Satch talks about his gear on 'up in the sky' and I think he mentions using a wizard head, a peavey amp (5150?) and possibly a DS-1 into his marshall 6100.

Nah' it can't be. I don't belive that he used big amps on that song. Really souds like a combo...

I also read that during the guitar solo one of his pedals crapped out on him and gave him this strange sound and he just went with it and continued the solo...

Mistakes are allways cool :)

Well, it wouldn't shock me if there was a light chorus in there too, but you can do tempo-timed bar vibratos... ;)

My guess is a DS-1 linked with a Super Chorus pedal but I could be very wrong. I remember seeing a photo of his set-up during Crystal Planet and noticed he had the same pedals as me, a Boss DD-3 Digital Delay and Boss CH-1 Super Chorus with what it seemed to be 2 DS-1s. One must be modified or set differently. Definatey an octave pedal for his solo (could be the one Hendrix used). Anyhow, just my guess.
I love his tone on that song and that album rules.

well, I read the interview with him and that's what it says. he used amp heads, not combos. It's the Guitarist Issue in 1998 with Joe on the cover; also the issue with the "heart of the sun" track. I don't know what cabs he was using, so perhaps he used his Palmer Speaker simulator?
and yes, he mentioned using a Fulltone Ultimate Octave on the song too. And I'm not sure about any mistakes, but he said that that crazy harmonic thing at the beginning of the solo was really cool and he had no idea how he could get that again.

Ah, that's what it is......a Fulltone Ultimate Octave, now I remember.
