Title: English Football
Description: soccer, for some of you.

The_Alien - March 15, 2006 04:53 AM (GMT)
instead of hijacking threads with football banter i thought i'd start another thread to talk about the beautiful game. so i guess we just start from the last hijacked thread? i believe that was the peavey valveking one in gear discussions

Satch Boogie - March 15, 2006 05:28 AM (GMT)
Actually, call it what you want, but there's no difference between the Premiership and the old old 1st Division, only the name has changed. Therefore, we actually hold the record! :smoke2:

18 Times, 18 Times, 18 Times!!

Bro, no hard feelings. :party3:
Okay, you've won more FA Cups than us. But to end the arguement, Liverpool are simply the most successful English club ever. Please get used to being second. You won't be winning anymore titles either because Chelsea will continue to buy the league every year by spending a shitload on new players. That includes players that they don't actually need or want, like Ballack. The only reason they will buy him is to stop him going to ManU. Like they need another midfielder!!!! Same applied for Wright-Phillips, basically to stop him going to Arsenal or Liverpool ;)

Baldu - March 15, 2006 07:43 AM (GMT)
Juventus

sridhar11_2 - March 15, 2006 09:05 AM (GMT)
Juve will probably beat Arsenal. But overall i think Barcelona look strong enough to take the prize this year. My fav team is Barcelona by the way.

Getting back to topic. I'm surprised to see Rovers and Tottenham so high up there. Bolton are they're too but this comes as no shock to me. They're a really good squad and i see them getting to the champions league in the next couple of years if they continue to play this way. I always enjoy watching a Bolton game unlike most other matches its really interesting no matter what the result.

Dude, you gotta rename this thread 'Seamen, Tackles and Balls' Haha

Juve are my favourite Italian team. But I've been saying that Arsenal are going to win the Champions League all season. Henry is just awesome.

The_Alien - March 16, 2006 06:15 AM (GMT)
are you insane? arsenal havent got a fricking hope in hell of beating barcelona. henry alone will do nothing. i remind you they beat real madrid. not exactly the cream of the crop anymore. and as a liverpool fan, you should be hating arsenal - they smashed you lot last weekend!!

i like what you say about chelsea, thats pretty much what i think, but theres a limit on how many players a team can play at one time, and with a couple of new midfielders i think you will see my team look like the real deal once again. defeatist talk will do no one any good anyway. liverpool need some new defenders (finnan? hyypia is old) and at least 1 top class forward.

chelsea really really annoy me though

AND FINALLY: the premiership is managed differently to old div 1, and was christened as a new league, so as far as i'm concerned, liverpool 0 Man Utd.....more than i can count. thats more than 8. and you cant keep holding onto ancient history. ill just ask you this - when did liverpool last win the league? i wont answer for you, i'll let you say this yourself ;)

Juventus are good, but i also admire AC Milan. they are kinda being ignored this CL, and they really dont deserve to be

Yes they did, but nothing more than what we did to them 2 weeks ago at Anfield.

Another delusional ManU fan!!! Apart from the name, how is it different? Same number of teams, still play home and away, 3 pts for a win, 1 pt for a draw, no difference :P

Finnan ain't old my friend. Very good player. Hyppia is getting slow now, thats why we brought Agger. But agree that we could do with another top class defender. Definately need a striker, should have brought Owen back last year. Plus we need a good right winger, that's if Chelsea don't buy them all

The_Alien - March 17, 2006 06:47 AM (GMT)
agger do  thats a great song i assume you know it, the bbc came up with that one i think.

the difference between premiership is pretty much just that the premier ship is still relevant, and no one cares about old division one now. dont live in the past - live in the present, or at least the last 15 or so years!! i'll let you have a wee scouse gloat over your champions league win, but dont be so entrenched in the distant past.

Rafael Benitez would have looked the biggest tit on the planet if he'd paid 16 mil for a player he had sold for 8 mil plus a rubbish reserve team player. it seems weird that owen is playing for little newcastle (although not THAT little to be fair)
but it would have been too hard for Benitez to sign him back, really. what liverpool need to do is find a relatively unknown player, like van nistelrooy. he was known when he played for PSV but not like owen is when he's playing for real madrid or newcastle united. i havent got any suggestions though. if i did have any i wouldnt be sharing them with you anyway :P

what do you think about ballack wanting to go to chelsea? i think hes mad, and im quite annoyed by it. i really cant stand chelsea. i hate them slightly more than liverpool, and liverpool i hate slightly more than arsenal. arsenal i hate slightly more than manchester city, who i hate slightly more than the rest of the bunch. there you go, you have my order of hate now. but dont get distracted!! lets talk about Ballack!! :innocent:

sridhar11_2 - March 17, 2006 07:41 AM (GMT)
Ok Just my view - Man united suck, i hate MANure United . When was the last time Van Nistelroy scored from ouside the box. I agree that he can finish the ball like no one in the world but how versatile is this guy come on!! Man united is on its way down now.

The_Alien - March 17, 2006 08:01 AM (GMT)
please no general statements about what you would like to have happen. it really doesnt matter whether van nistelrooy scores from inside the box or outside, a goal is the same no matter where its from, this is not basketball.

and i would accept that maybe you had a point about Manchester United being on the way down if you could back it up with some evidence that they are, in fact, on the way down. 2nd place and carling cup champions doesnt sound like a club who are on the way down to me. ;)

Arsenal - theres a team i'd be more worried about being on the way down.

EDIT: to be clear, im not saying you cant hate united or whatever but at least put forth an argument as to why they are goign down. and yes i do argue about footie alot - i cant help myself!! :P

Well they are coming down on standards they set. The team that won the treble in 99 goes out in last place not even qualifying for uefa cup in the Qualifying Round Three of champions league. Thats one thing. A team that used to dominate domestic football now is losing to teams like Blackburn,Middl'sbro,Man City which are not the teams competing for first place.

And Yes you do argue a lot about football.

The_Alien - March 17, 2006 10:49 AM (GMT)
whos to say they arent getting back to those standards though? they dont look very in decline to me! bayern munich went out of the champions league completetly a few years ago but theyre fine. i am pleased you hate united though, they must be doing something right!

Not so distant past, I still remember when your lot couldn't win anything! Then when you actually starting winning, I remember all the bigheaded ManU fans going around thinking they would rule forever and calling the League Cup, the Mickey Mouse Cup. Same fans now revelling in the "glory" in winning that same cup. >_<
Talking about "current" success, and if you judge success as winning trophies, did you know that Liverpool are the most successful club this century? The only thing we haven't won is the Premiership and I'm hopeful Rafa will win us that sooner rather than later, if anyone can without the money that Chelsea or ManU have, then it's Rafa.

Plus don't discard history so easily, it's what makes clubs what they are. Clubs like Liverpool, Arsenal, Aston Villa and yes, ManU are steeped in history. And before you ask why Aston Villa, before ManU started winning the league again, they were the 2nd team with the most major honours in England. You carry on deluding yourself that the Premiership and the old 1st Division aren't the same thing, same old manu trying to undermine everyone else's achievements. Bad losers and worse of all bad winners.

The_Alien - March 18, 2006 12:47 AM (GMT)
i'm actually more concerned with the present. still proud of the treble, but it doesnt figure in my thinking really. regardless of winning anything, i love watching manchster united because they are one of the most exciting teams in the world, plenty of entertainment

and by Mickey Mouse, i'll have you know that they were referring to the size of the league cup as being comparable with the worldwide brand "disney". now thats praise :D

i dont only gauge success on trophies, i think a successful club should play like one. liverpool and chelsea are two boring negative sides, always thinking from the back. thered be a riot if united started playing like them, queiroz nearly started that off but thankfully we're still far more watchable. that makes me proud - attacking football has always gone hand in hand with manchester united

and theres no need to refer to united as bad losers and bad winners. youre just insecure because you know manchester united are still at the top, and youre jealous. what is it now? 15 years?

and lets not get too serious, its only football and i dont wanna get this thread closed ;) B)

Satch Boogie - March 18, 2006 08:40 AM (GMT)
Jealous? Of ManU?   I think not ;) Whilst you may dismiss our achievements, I'm proud of what Liverpool have achieved over the years.
It's funny to think that you think you're still at the top! I'm sure the only thing we'll agree on is that unfortunately Chelsea will stay on top whilst they are allowed to buy the top players that their opponents want when they don't need them (Ballack, Wright-Phillips.....). Abromovich can spend £100 million a year on Chelsea without batting an eye lid, that's just *part* of the interest he earns in a year from his fortune. Sad policy to have, buy top players and stick them on the bench. I have no respect for any player that is willing to do that. Wright-Phillips would have been knocking for a starting place for England at the World Cup if he'd gone to a team that actually played him!! Instead, he'll remain a bit-part player for England too. I don't know anyone who can afford to spend over £20million on a player and stick them on the bench. It's obscene :censored2:

Anyways, to stop us arguing endlessly over who's the greatest (that's us btw :P ) lets just agree:

You hate Liverpool, I hate ManU. We both hate Chelsea (football Chavs)!!!

yes. thats all i can say youre right.

but dont be so defeatist, chelsea can field 11 players at a time, and if manchester united can get 2 good midfielders, they can be as good as, if not better than chelsea. chelsea lack a van nistelrooy and a rooney. manchester united can catch chelsea (not this season i mean next season or the one after). we are the hope of the premiership!! everyones hopes rest on us!! you know its true

i say we unite in our hatred of chelsea though, rather than arguing.

actually something ive been wondering - before chelsea went russian, why didnt our big teams snap up players like cech! how the hell did he go unnoticed!!

The_Alien - March 21, 2006 06:38 AM (GMT)
OKAY OKAY I APOLOGIZE I DIDNT MEAN TO GET OVERLY OBSESSIVE WITH MANCHESTER UNITED. please dont leave me alone here!! ill start a conversation with myself otherwise and i dont want to have to sink into that!

Satch Boogie - March 22, 2006 04:52 AM (GMT)
No need to apologise. You are only sticking up for your own team dude :)

I think the premiership will be a little closer next year. Chelsea will probably win it again. If manu carry on as they are now and strenghthen in midfield, then they'll definately be a very serious threat. Liverpool will also strenghten the squad, hopefully up front and a right winger and again should close the gap with Chelski. Now Arsenal are starting to play good football again and ripping teams apart, if they carry on playing like they are now AND if Henry stays, then I think they'll actually provide the biggest threat to Chelsea.

Then of course they'll be a surprise team to do well, there always seems to be 1 or 2 teams to push for a champions league place.

The_Alien - March 25, 2006 07:23 AM (GMT)
next year anything could happen in the premiership. i always wonder why teams like spurs look like theyre turning into good teams to challenge the top few then they implode and get relegated. southampton looked like they were getting good a few seasons back. i dont want to say things like chelsea will probably win it next season, no sense in tempting fate. just depends on whether the chasing pack get the right signings and things fall into place.

i have noticed chelsea are looking a nasty bunch lately, gesturing at the crowd and trying to intimidate the ref. hope they get bans and point deductions to teach them a lesson. it irritates me how gary neville got into trouble then gallas gets away with it....

i cant see arsenal being a big threat to chelsea, regardless of henry or no henry. who are they gona sign? they still have no money cause of their new stadium. next season will be between man utd, liverpool, and chelsea. spurs and arsenal fighting it out for 4th methinks.

Satch Boogie - March 25, 2006 04:50 PM (GMT)
Are we the only two who like football around here?

motorcycle_driver - March 25, 2006 08:42 PM (GMT)
NOOOO...

im here.

i love Juventus. being an Indian, it's really wierd, me liking an Italian team, rather than the ever famous english clubs. i dont know even ONE guy who likes Juve.

anyways, since this is english football, i tot arsenal could do better this time. but that has kept me wondering the result of their UEFA Champions league tie with Juve. Maybe juve can pull off a surprise.

yeah baby......

hope Juve win this year.they las won it 10 years ago. they came to the finals 2 few years ago, and hopefully, they might get it this year.

but not if they play how they played with werder bremen. that 2nd leg win was such a lucky win. they shud be given the luckiest team this year. maybe they should get more aggressive, and really strengthen their defence. though they win, they always give away a lot of goals.

but if its a Juve vs. Barcelona final, that will be bloody awesome.

Juve are my favourite Italian team. Liverpool will always be my no.1 though.

Can't wait to watch the Juve/Arsenal games. Should be good. I've been backing Arsenal to win the whole comp for the past few months, and I haven't changed my mind.

motorcycle_driver - March 26, 2006 07:06 AM (GMT)
yeah, just a couple of days remaining. is this the quarters or the semi's?

Satch Boogie - March 26, 2006 08:47 AM (GMT)
It's the quarter-finals matey.

motorcycle_driver - March 26, 2006 03:03 PM (GMT)
oh yeah just checked it out.

btw, did u read the match preview on www.uefa.com? arsenal seem to have won more, and Juve have won less. besides, juve usually dont perform very well out of home.

many matches have been evidence for that. and they always come back with a surprise at home. i think we may see a repeat here.

btw, i just realised we're talkin bout UEFA and Juve more than english football.

Satch Boogie - March 26, 2006 03:21 PM (GMT)
It's all good dude. Love my footie :)

Looks like Birmingham are getting another thrashing today!! >_<

motorcycle_driver - March 27, 2006 07:01 AM (GMT)
so are we 3 the only ones who like football here?

The_Alien - March 27, 2006 09:51 AM (GMT)
looks like it. maybe we should take it upon ourselves to educate the rest of the forum. or you guys can im a bit lazy and i'd probably put them off. i should have really named the thread football rather than english, its a bit mean on you guys that like other nations leagues.

im gonna go in late so i can watch one of the games in the CL. dunno whos gonna be televised but it should be entertaining. the Champions League screens live at around 6 am here, so time before work to watch.

motorcycle_driver - March 27, 2006 07:27 PM (GMT)
the first one is Juve vs. Arsenal.

motorcycle_driver - March 29, 2006 08:17 AM (GMT)
sa i predicted, arsenal won it by 2-0. man, juve played horribly.

The_Alien - March 29, 2006 10:29 AM (GMT)
good one. pity you didnt mention the score or you might have had us thinking you were psychic!

have to say i saw the second half of that game and arsenal looked really good, much better than usual.

i myself will be watching Manchester United vs West Ham United, in the premiership, assuming its on tele. far better than that champions league rubbish! no one cares about the champions league anymore anyway! :P

motorcycle_driver - March 29, 2006 04:38 PM (GMT)
REALLY???

no wonder the crowd turnout is always big!!!

hope it goes Juve's way a week later.

zenmonkey - March 29, 2006 05:14 PM (GMT)
it won't, Juve are an ageing team and a bit of a 'one-trick pony', they hate teams giving them a hard time. Look at what Liverpool did to them last year, Arsenal have done exactly the same to them this year. It should be interesting next week...

Satch Boogie - March 29, 2006 10:09 PM (GMT)
Damn, missed the Arsenal/Juve game. By all accounts, Arsenal were pretty outstanding.
Even though I'm a Liverpool fan, I got to admit I love the flowing football Arsenal play when they're at their best.

sridhar11_2 - March 30, 2006 02:03 AM (GMT)
I have to admit it was a pretty pathetic performance from Juve. But Arsenal did play very well. Stupid challenges from Camoranesi and Zebina got them sent off and they'll not return for the second leg. Juve look pretty bad right now.

motorcycle_driver - March 30, 2006 08:55 PM (GMT)
ZM. if they really were a one trick pony, they wouldnt be at the top of Serie A with a comfortable lead. they're not an old team too. thay got a lot of young players. i guess u think Del Piero is old, so Juve's old. but by no means are they old.

they have always been a weak team in their away games and much stronger in their home games. this i say after seeing a lot of UCL matches. so there is a good chance of comin back.

Satch Boogie - April 5, 2006 10:20 PM (GMT)
Gotta say, Arsenal are looking good. They've got a great chance to get to the final now.

motorcycle_driver - April 6, 2006 04:51 AM (GMT)
yeah, Arsenal were too strong in defending. though juve did get chances, all of em were half hearted attempts. how can Juve play like this when they lead in Serie A?!!!
