Title: Joe's Most Underrated Songs

motorcycle_driver - March 19, 2006 09:08 PM (GMT)
what i feel is that MANY of Joe's songs have a great melody, nice harmonisation, and great solos. but for some reason, we just forget those songs.

so here's a thread where we can discuss these "underrated" songs.

Drew - March 19, 2006 09:23 PM (GMT)
Not an original, but his solo and tone on "All Alone" is absolutely brilliant.

Mickey - March 19, 2006 10:03 PM (GMT)
The Forgotten (Part 2) love it just got that great feeling and no one seem to talk about it much..

Sibanez - March 19, 2006 10:34 PM (GMT)
Tsssh the Forgotten part 2 isn't underrated :P

I think Attack from EOC is underrated. It has some great moments in it, it's very atmospheric.

Drew - March 20, 2006 12:00 AM (GMT)
+1 on The Forgotten pt. II, I nearly mentioned that as well.

Echo is pretty damned good, too.

darkfox - March 20, 2006 12:09 AM (GMT)
well, The Bells Of Lal (part 2) is wicked...and I think Luminous Flesh Giants is amazing

sridhar11_2 - March 20, 2006 01:53 AM (GMT)
My fav underrated song i think is Dreaming #11. For some reason i love this song. And in general Time machine is an underrated album i think. I like it more than most otheralbums from joe.

Dimarzio FRED - March 20, 2006 01:56 AM (GMT)
im not sure how "underated" it is but one of my favorite tracks off SBM that i rarely hear mention "hill groove"

i like "souls of distortion" but dont hear much talk about that either

tschommer - March 20, 2006 01:58 AM (GMT)
I'm not sure if it could be considered an underrated tune, but I really love "Not Of This Earth". I just really love the clean chords at the beginning on the song.

Shawn - March 20, 2006 04:25 AM (GMT)
Ride. I still love it, everything about it.

motionblur - March 20, 2006 05:05 AM (GMT)
Into the Light would be my choice. It's a beautiful solo and I never hear anyone talk about it much. It's easily the best "end of album" song in Joe's catalogue. A great tribute to his father's passing.

motorcycle_driver - March 20, 2006 06:51 AM (GMT)
actually, most of the Time Machine songs seem to be underrated. time machine, mighty turtle head, banana mango 2, dweller on the threshold are my fave underrated songs from that album.

others would include with jupiter in mind, echo, the bells of laal, trundrumbalind, attack, champagne?.

Powerslave214 - March 20, 2006 07:46 AM (GMT)
The Forgotten Pt 2 = +1,000,000!

Ride is awesome. So cheerful song, I love it.
The Forgotten Part II is my favourite of all Joe´s songs, so what can I say...

i think so

motorcycle_driver - March 20, 2006 01:50 PM (GMT)
yeah, i am become death displays good use of the pick scratching technique. speed of light too. the whole album is filled with songs like that(except woodstock jam though).

joemeansgod - March 20, 2006 04:40 PM (GMT)
Back to shalla bal

+1. The first couple tracks there on the unreleased studio section have a really unique sound/feel to them - "Time Machine," "Speed of Light," "All Alone..." It's actually one of my favorite periods in Satch's career, both due to the compositions themselves and the guitar tones he's using, and it's something I'd really have liked to see extended into a full album.

In particular, I love the mix/production - there's something very grunge-y about it, with the big drum sound and warm guitar tones, but at the same time it's a bit more polished sounding than your average Nirvana release (maybe a little closer to Live's "Throwing Copper" in feel, which incidentally is a phenominal album, love or hate the genre), and it's a really great, clear, rich sounding mix.

motorcycle_driver - March 20, 2006 09:17 PM (GMT)
i like slow and easy too. the tone is so fat and the sitar kinda sound he gets during the solo is nice to hear too. definitely underrated.

I find Time Machine a very well thought out album, Joe puts a hell of alot of expression into most of the tracks. But i must admit its one of my favourite albums :rock2:

odd trio - March 21, 2006 01:25 AM (GMT)
i was listening to time machine leading up to the new albums release. i sure had expectations . that time machine is as good as any of the albums just for good songs .those songs have just about all you need .

Kilar - March 21, 2006 04:07 AM (GMT)
I really like 'The Phone Call' of FIABD. It was a skip-on-by track for the first 5 or 6 years but then low and behold it dawned on me, this is a groovy little track. Like the lyrics too, almost like an ANGRY Joe song! Angry and Joe is almost an oxymoron!

motorcycle_driver - March 21, 2006 08:06 AM (GMT)
and the fact that he actually sung in thru a phone makes it even more interesting.

Colemanishere - March 21, 2006 01:16 PM (GMT)
Back To Shalla-Bal is one of the most rockin songs I have EVER heard on a Joe album, Idon't come here often, but I have never seen a thread commenting this song. It's so loud and awesome.

joemeansgod - March 21, 2006 03:53 PM (GMT)
Time machine and Flying in a blue dream are the two albums that present joe's versatile guitar playing ability and composition the best, IMO.

I don't know why people always forget to name Time Machine when talking about best satch ablum.

motorcycle_driver - March 22, 2006 03:12 PM (GMT)
they dont mention Time Machine as Joe's best album cos it's underrated. thats exactly what this thread is bout: forgotten great albums n songs.

zenmonkey - March 22, 2006 05:11 PM (GMT)
The Mighty Turtle Head, an amazing song and good fun to play. Also If from the eponymous album, super funky ending

MegaIce - March 29, 2006 10:18 AM (GMT)
I think the live in the studio JS '95 tunes are really great. Andy Fairweather Low is the perfect rhythm guitarist for that CD. I really like Down, Down, Down.

Criss - March 29, 2006 12:47 PM (GMT)
Back To The Shalla-Bal is an awesome song, I personally dont understand why Joe dosen't play it instead of Summer Song every now and then. Its one of those hard rockin show off songs, hell of fun to play too !

But Id say most under-rated song is Lights Of Heaven. How he can make it sound so mellow yet so intense is beyond me

Mapu - March 29, 2006 01:13 PM (GMT)
I really like Psycho Monkey, a song that not many people listen to it or care about it.
I don't know, maybe it is a bit simplier than any satch songs, but the verse tone it really good, and the chorus theme its just awesome, so Satriani Style, those theme that make you go "yaaay" and put a smile on you

Yeah! I love that song and would agree 100% with the Time Machine comments.

p-funk - April 4, 2006 04:05 AM (GMT)
Memories, Dreaming #11 floors me and I never see it mentioned.

Spider - April 4, 2006 05:58 PM (GMT)
There'll be a lot of songs like:
Day At The Beach (!), Back To Shalla-Bal, The Forgotten Part 2 (!), Motorcycle Driver, Thinking Of You, Speed Of Light, Baroque, Lights Of Heaven (!), A Train Of Angels, Champagne, You Saved My Life (!), The Souls Of Distortion (!), Just Look Up.

Reivax - April 10, 2006 08:11 AM (GMT)
Wow. I couldn't agree more with the Time Machine comments. It was always right at the top of most played Joe cd's along with Crystal Plantet, for me. Other than woodstock Jam, I adore the whole disc.

I'll just name a few other songs I think are underrated (btw, I don't think unforgotten II is underrated, because I've found it to be one of the more popular tunes. One of my favs.)

Memories
Into The Light
Rubina's Blue Sky of Hapiness
Moroccan Sunset
Clouds Race Across The Sky (really the whole EOC album is underrated as far as I'm concerned, because I think it's one of the coolest albums I own. I remember when it came out so many people were really upset.)
The Traveler
Slick

I could name more, but that's good enough. :P

Ain't that the truth! EOC was amazing. Joe really stepped up to the plate for that album and seriously pushed his own boundaries in all aspects of his musicianship. The results were amazing.

I'm a huge Crystal Method fan, so that's probably why I was able to "get" EOC.

motorcycle_driver - April 11, 2006 06:56 AM (GMT)
yeah not many ppl who like rock like EOC. thats why i didnt like it the first time, and loved it later.

I second the vote for Echo.
Very cool song.

s13satch - May 1, 2006 05:26 PM (GMT)
Cryin is a great Satch ballad that seems to get overlooked. Plus, it's not too difficult to play (which is a plus for me because I suck at the guitar...lol).
