Title: The Proper Way To Do The Satch Scream
Description: Can a mod pin this please!? (Incs Video)
richardsim7 - March 26, 2006 01:42 AM (GMT)
Okay, so there's been lots of discussion and people wanting to know how to do it
I have learned how to do this trick PERFECTLY from Joe's own words :)
Here is how to do it:
| QUOTE |
| You'll need a guitar with a wang bar, an amp with a generous amount of distortion, and a pick. You will also need to be familiar with the technique of creating harmonics with the right-hand thumb. This is accomplished by allowing a bit of your right-hand thumnb to touch the string or strings as they are picked. Start with a broad downstroke across strings 4, 3 and 2, about four inches from the bridge. Use the right-hand thumb technique to create two or three harmonics. Sumultaneously, reach over with your left hand, grab the bar, and swiftly but smoothly bring it down, then up as far as you can. Hold it for a brief moment, then quickly bring it down until the strings fret out. This should take about four seconds. |
I hope this clears up any confusion and if a mod could pin this topic that would be good :)
Here's a video:

I'll be trying it out tomorrow.. 11:05 now and my wife would murder me..lol
I'll post my results..
THANKS ALLOT :)
BTW: I already pissed her off the other day trying it..Hahaha
seongkeat - March 26, 2006 06:34 AM (GMT)
any video of teaching this method ??
seems like very hard to get the scream............
richardsim7 - March 26, 2006 08:43 AM (GMT)
Sure man, I'll make a video at some point :)
To be honest, it was easier than expected :P

*BUMP!* Come on people :(

Its a great trick, shame my floyd rose guitar is so useless, the note is dead before you bend back up lol.
Satch Boogie - May 29, 2006 11:55 AM (GMT)
Thanks dude, I'll have a go at that a bit later mate :)
Just one thing, are you doing pinch harmonics on open strings?
richardsim7 - May 29, 2006 01:40 PM (GMT)
Yeah, as far as I know

A short video would help.. Maybe I'm being a moron but I just can't get it rite. I can get close but cant seem to figure it out.. I think I need a good visual to get it.
I would be so freaking happy if I could do the Satch sceam.. It would be perfect for the start of "Never Bleed" which I'm now hitting a harmonic scream at the 7th fret.
richardsim7 - May 29, 2006 05:24 PM (GMT)
Hmm, alright, since I got my new satch pups though, the output isn't as high, so it's a bit more difficult to get a scream lol I'll try later on though :)

I can do it easily....I'll see if I can record a clip or two....The method mentioned is not the only way to make your guitar scream like Satch... B)
richardsim7 - May 29, 2006 09:02 PM (GMT)
Nope but it is THE way the man himself described ;)

to get the scream right, you have to know where the artificial harmonics are on the open strings. some are higher pitched than others. i mostly do them on the open G string. i'll occasionally do the G and the B (which makes a really neat sound). i'll do the D for lower pitched screams, and the B for higher ones. but i almost never do all 3 strings at once (it's just too hard :P ).

...of one of many different ways to do it. All you have to do is experiment with harmonic nodes along the length of the strings, and pinch harmonics.

So can this be made a sticky? :)

Johnljones7443 - May 30, 2006 09:37 AM (GMT)
Meh, I can't seem to get the right harmonics on the open strings
-_-
richardsim7 - May 30, 2006 09:59 AM (GMT)
Ah you'll get it :)
I'll try make a video today, but i'm kinda busy all week

Would help I guess... check out your pick angle and so forth... I'll just keep messin' around until I hit a sweet spot :P
motorcycle_driver - May 31, 2006 04:09 AM (GMT)
yeah, i got this technique just a few tries after watchin him do it in LISF. quite easy. problem is, i have a classic tremolo, n not a floyd rose, which sux.
wetpants - May 31, 2006 07:32 AM (GMT)
Ok, here's some Satch style screams I recorded...Tell me what you think...It's just a rough recording directly through the computer's crappy sound recorder. :P

I thought that was recording of a first contact with aliens
AverageJoeguitarist - June 3, 2006 05:53 PM (GMT)
i think there is not a proper way of doing the satch scream or a dive bomb i think you have to find your own way of producing that sound. there is not a way of telling someone how to do it.
richardsim7 - June 3, 2006 06:01 PM (GMT)
....Yes there is, Satch just told us :P

satriani guy - June 4, 2006 03:04 PM (GMT)
surely the kinda pickups your using makes a differance???
ive been surfing the internet for days to find out the realy way to scream and thank god youve found it!!!!
i can get the harmonics going but could you explain the bit when you use the flloyd some more i dont quite get it??
much thanks
Drew
richardsim7 - June 4, 2006 03:28 PM (GMT)
once you got the harmonics, take the floyd arm with your left arm, take it down, then back up! :)

Not sure if you guys saw this clip yet. It was in new tread posted here by “Mind Sculpture” (Thanks!).
Joe explains and demonstrates this whammy technique near the end of the video.
You can just jump to the whammy part by sliding the scroll bar at the bottom of the clip to about 16:54 (minutes/seconds).

wetpants - June 4, 2006 05:55 PM (GMT)
Nice..but you should move up and down the strings to catch different harmonic node points, and maybe choke up on the pick a bit more to get those pinch harmonics to jump out better....Also, maybe try catching some harmonics on the B and G strings....You can get that 'spaceship taking off' kind of effect if you catch the right harmonics on the back edge of the neck pickup, on the high E and B strings....Good stuff man. ;)
Niluge_KiWi - July 12, 2006 12:23 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the video!
So its not for me : I 've just my father's guitar, a Gibson "The Paul", and there is no vibrato...

Try picking some natural harmonics and then bend the strings behind the nut to raise the pitch and/or vibrato the note(s).
satrianifreak - July 12, 2006 09:26 AM (GMT)
i think this scream is a lot easier to do than the Dimebag scream.... now thats some wicked shit... :rock2:
Satch2004 - July 12, 2006 09:00 PM (GMT)
So there's no other way to do this? like w/ a whammy pedal or wah or something? cause i broke my whammy bar ♠... but it was on my shitty strat, and my only good guiatr is my les paul...is it possible on that?
satrianifreak - July 13, 2006 02:49 PM (GMT)
nope i don't really think u can possibly do it on a les paul.... for the real satch scream you need a two way trem...

...but you can sort of simulate it by picking harmonics and then raising the pitch behind the nut. Try this: pick natural harmonics at the fifth fret on the G and B strings. Now, take your finger and press on the G string to raise the pitch...not too fast and not too slow...You should hear one harmonic rising, and a ghost harmonic 'falling' simultaneously. Little trick I picked up from John5. ;)

Thanks! that sorta sounds like it.

A long time ago I listened to pantera, and was awestruck by the art. harmonics used... at that time I made myself some practice songs that all I did was learn to pinch harmonic every note. Like most of you've said here, I believe it takes doing it over and over and over again to get it down. joe played hours and hours... so I don't doubt that not only does he know where to pick, but what "note" will be ascertained by hitting it... he always seems to be in key when he does it.
I noticed two things richard... one... you turn the pick sideways and point down giving you a better chance of nailing your flesh... good vid.
Two, I see you're on Neowin.net... I know that off subject.. but great to have you there... I've been around there when they ran that site off a 300Mhz box, and now they push like 3Tb of bandwidth a month!!

^^ Are you not a mod? :P
