Title: Need Help! I'm Stupid! (fx Loop)

I just got my new Tonelab SE and tried it out a little. But I wasn't to impressed with it. Espacially since I tried it out on the music fair in Frankfurt last year and really digged it. SO I thought maybe it has sth to do with the way I set it up and tried it over the FX Loop. But I've never put anything thru the FX Loop and seem to be doing sth wrong.

So I connected the guitar to the tonelabs input. Put one cable from the tonelab's send to the amp's (the JSX Combo :rock2:) return and vice versa. I've tried putting the send low and return high and the other way around. But I only get a clean unmodified sound if I play sth. No matter what effects I use it all sounds the same. If I turn the FX switch on the JSX's pedal off, I get no sound at all

So what the fuck am I doing wrong?

I'm probably REALLY wrong here, but have you tried to switch the send/return connections? Plus, I tend to set both send/return levels to 5, probably wrong again!

P.S. I hope when you try this, you don't blow up your amp ;)

Yeah I would turn the volume WAY down before trying that out LOL

Hi, I don't have the SE but I do have the tonelab and I know some guys who do have the SE. So here goes:

The Send/Return on the tonelab is for attaching an external effects processor, so it is basically the same as the send/return on the amp. It is very important to remeber that the Tonelab is basically a complete amp and speaker cab in one unit without any real amplification of signal.

If you want to use the SE for distortion you need to put it in the front of the amp and set the EQ on the Amp to 5 on everything, as all eq will be dealt with by the Vox.

Alternatively, you can use the Tonelab as a pure effects unit by plugging the send from the amp to the input of the vox and the out to the return of the JSX. THis will make any reverbs, delay or modulation effects really sing.

Check out the manual as it really helps on this.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

+1 on everything Neil said. Though, it's worth noting that the Tonelab really excells for direct recording and silent practicing and the like - I'm not sure how a jSX behaves at low volumes, but you might be better off just using that as your principal distortion source.

I agree with Drew. Personally, I would use the Tonelab for recording and practice and then use it for all its wonderful delays modulations etc in the loop and let the amp do any distortion.
