Title: 22/24 Fret Guitars?...

Richie - July 25, 2006 11:31 AM (GMT)
Hie to all. Knowing that probably this issue has been discussed before, and feed up looking and not finding a decent answer, i was looking forward to hear your opinon concerning this issue. If it as been discussed, please let me know where it is( there are so many treads!
Here goes my doubt. Was looking to buy a js, but recently(been a classical guitar player mainly) found out that most of the js have 22 fret while some guitars have 24. So Iīve read that the sound gets diferent relating each guitar, but follow my lead- having two more frets will not increase sligthly the playing capabilitie( in terms of notes) there are to more frets(two more octaves, think its the way to say). So, for example, when a player has notes to make on the high e( I think its the note name you guys call it), we are watching to players playing the same music, one as the 22 and the other the 24 fret guitar. The one with the 22 fret any time will get out of possible notes to play while the other keeps playing? Is it possible to play notes whitout the two "extra frets"? I just donīt know whivh is better? See great players using one, others using the other.
If its the sound who is better, whatīs the two fret advantage. If ar the frets the advantage, why are there people playing 24 fret guitars? it depends? For a starter which is better? Many doubts. Hope you guys can help.
Thanks for your possible replies.
Bye.

Hey Richie, well ive used both and like both personally :o
My fender squier has 22frets and although it drifts in/out of tune more times then i have hot dinners , it still sounds clear on the 22nd fret ;)
I used Av's custom guitar and that has 24frets, i noticed that the notes start bleeding and drying up over the 22nd fret :o
However (depending on your pickups), you can adjust the pole heights on your pickup to counteract the drying up , bleeding problem, on Av's now its pretty much crystal clear on the 23rd and 24th, even bending on the 24th has a nice sound :D
Ive nearly finished building my guitar, thats going to have 24 frets, for my it just feels slightly better :)
I think its just personal preference m8, the tonal diffrences aren't a serious problem really, cos you can just tweak your setup to suite it
Someone did mention to me that using harmonics on diffrent fret size necks might make a diffrence , but i never have a problem doing any kind of harmonics, guess its just a subject where you will get a diffrent answer from diffrent ppl m8

Thanks Bahamut. So, from your point of view I notice that the main diference may be on the final sound the guitar is producing(sorry for not beeing into this things, just donīt have the sensitivitie, for now at least :D but I plan to get there.
But one thing i continue not understanding- the 24 fret actually allows you to have to more octaves than a 22? If so, it depends on the playing stile/type of music your willing to produce right? Cos satch plays(wonderfully  ) 22 fret guitars-at least many of them, and the sound he takes from them is pure and simply sublime stuff! But take for example Petrucci. i love that Glasgow Kiss(donīt know if you now it), and I started learning that first part(on the classic guitar ^_^ ) but then when he starts playing the same melody a few octaves higher i notice one of his last notes just it the highest note available on the 24 fret neck. my question-beeing so, is it impossible to play(take this music as an example) some musics on the 22 fret Ibanez? And Iīm not talking about how the guitar delivers the sound throw the amplifiers. its a little confusing to me. donīt know if, buying a 22 fret in the future will or not feel a "handicap" towards the 24 oneīs... <_< (But i LOVE the JS 1200, didnīt want it to be less than a machine :D )
Any insights? Iīve read that even whitout the last 2 frets is possible to play notes...strange...or not? confusing...
Anyway, thanks a lot for the input. Be seeing you

Yeah i think you can manage with just a 22 fret guitar m8, ive used my squier for the best part of over 10yrs lol
Then again i didn't really start playing Satch's stuff until well recently, so had no need for a 24 fret guitar(even though he uses 22 fret guitars lol).
Going back to the sound though(sorry lol), you will get a slightly diffrent sound from your neck pickup on the 22 fret guitar to the 24th, on a 22 fret guitar the pickup sits right where the 23rd-24th frets would usually be, so that is alittle diffrence between them :P
Yeah a 24 fret guitar is practically 2 octaves(relativity speaking)
Apart from that m8, i think its just depends on the player and what he/she likes :o

Thanks man. I think i got the idea. 22 fret means a slightly diferent sound, a 24 fret means two octaves plus, althought to get that last few notes to a good sound level, many times we need to "tune" the pickups. ok. Got it.
Having the risk of turning into a pain in the a"#$, got one more question. Here it goes:
Many guitars(Ibanez included) have the tremelo with that "custom" bridge(donīt know if its the correct name), and also have that halen key screws (to help the guitar stay in tune?). Now, Know Ernie Ball Music Man Petrucci signature guitars? They have a complete diferent and strange(not so usual) tremelo system. Besides, they donīt have that halen key system. Do you know why is that? It seems to me itīs much easier to just tune the guitar in the "upper tuners" screws, bye ear like i do in my classic one. Maybe itīs a big joke what Iīm saying, but iīm here to LEARN ;) If you know about what Iīm talking about, what are the main diferences/advantages-disavantages and things like that?
Thanks Bahamut for the constante inputs ^_^ Maybe one day we will see each other when playing the guitar somewhere in the world. But for now I have to train hard. I consider myself only an average rythm guitarrist, bad at lead. I have to learn scales(Iīm considering pro lessons), practice, practice...and practice
Bye.

Im not so sure on Ibanez's m8, because i use my own custom guitars mostly :o
I think your referring to the Edge Pro tremlo systems though?, yeah i think that you don't have to cut the ball ends of on those kind of style tremlo's.
I know Petrucci use's a weird kind of tremlo , pretty much like a Fender one(don't quote me on that though lol), Steve Morse also use's a Ernie Ball Musicman but he use's a Floyd Rose system, odd lol
I think Floyd Rose Tremlo's have always used the "snip the ball end of the string " and lock method, Ibanez's use to use them a longtime ago i think but i believe they changed all Ibanez's to have the strings go into them and lock pretty much(without snipping the ball ends of).
I would ask someone else on here about Ibanez's though m8, like i said its not really my field of expertise :D
Hehe hey no worries m8, you can never practice or learn enough in music, i find that you are always learning , thats the best way to be imo, once you have learnt something then take your weak points and turn them into your strengths , and so on ;)
If you don't lose sight of that m8, then you will be just fine :)

P.S
If you need any other kind of help m8(and you think i can help), then don't hesitate to send me a P.M, hopefully i can help you out :)

Thanks alot bahamut. I understand now. The guitar world is an all brave new world to discover. There are so many nuances,, diferent things which make all the point in the playing stile, type of music, sound of the guitar...many things. Be seeing you. ;)
P.S: Ah, just saw yesterday that Rockingīin the free world cover... fantastic job, awesome. You guys simply rock

Bahamut - July 26, 2006 04:56 PM (GMT)
