well, i've played covers a lot, 3 or 4 gigs. and i've had to pay only if it was a competition of sorts(entry fees).
but technically, isnt public performance of copyrighted songs illegal?

In the US I think bars / clubs that have live music have to pay a fee to the RIAA that covers playing copyrighted material, so yes it is legal as long as the venue is paying the fee. I would guess that even if they don't it's their problem more than it is yours.

yeah I believe tschommer is right. It's the venues that have to pay. In the UK all bars and pubs, clubs, etc have to pay the PRS (Performing Rights Society) to cover jukeboxes, gigs, etc.

I forgot about jukeboxes, I would guess that bars in the US have to pay up for those too, maybe just a percentage of the money that they take in though, not sure on that one.

here, nobody pays any attention to copyrights n stuff. so anyone copies anyone's music. i've heard SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many music directors flicking tunes n riffs foer their compositions. i guess that's illegal in teh US!
PS:1000th post!!!!
