Title: Satriani Tone With My Gear
Mikie75 - October 22, 2006 09:11 PM (GMT)
Hi to all!!
I'm from Italy and I love satch music!
I've a question for you.
My actual gear is :
JS 1200
Marshall DSL 401 combo amp
boss ds-1
dunlop cry baby 535q
Ts-9 mod ts-808
Is it possible to obtain satch tones (like satch boogie , starry night or summer song) with my gear ?
Is it a good amp to reach this kind of tone?
What else should I change?
Please let me know if you need other infos.
Thank you! :D

I think talking about gear you almost have it, maybe celestion greenpack speaker for the marshall, having Robert Keeley modification in your ds1, and buying a boss DD2 pedal.

effects wise what youve got is very close
DS-1 - Awsome satch tones out of this,, he nearly always uses this rather
than the JSX's crunch channel, he lets the stomp boxes do the
work
Dunlop Cry Baby 535q - First off this is an awsome wah, satch also uses
this and this gets GREAT satch tones
JS 1200 - obviously this is a satch guitar so not much more is needed to
be said
Marshall - marshall amps in general give decent satch tones, after all he
used to use them, i think he uses them now and then today
too,
If im thinking of the right amp, that marshall has a clean and
distortion/overdrive channel,if i were you id get it on the clean
and let you FX like DS-1 do all the work,.. .. .. ..
Im not sure about settings on youe DS-1 but im sure other people on this board will know loads of them
Hope this helps
~D~

I youve got a fair amount of money to spend, and like hoiguy said also a Digital Delay,, or maybe analouge, that should nearly be there

what's the diff b\w analog delay n digital delay?
satriani guy - October 23, 2006 06:32 PM (GMT)
supposedly analog give a warmer/richer sound, allthough that obviously depends on what make of pedal or pedal in general it is,,
though digital is meant to give a more precise delay, as in more accurate to what youve played and clearer
delays, like pretty much everything these days has gone digital, so sometimes its hard to get hold of an analog delay
Also you know the start to its so good, that something that only an analoge delay can do, i think it does some kinda crazy relay and digital cant do that because its all,,,,, well,, , digtal :P
some people prefer analog and some digital its just a matter of choice,, unlessim mising somthing

oh ok. and even the Searching scream part is done with an analog one.
all of joe's pedals are analog right?
satriani guy - October 23, 2006 08:53 PM (GMT)
i tihnk searching is done with wammy aswell, althjough not sure whether he uses a delay on it, sounds like he does
as for all of joes pedals being analouge,, im not sure, i think some are and some arent,, delay-wise though i think he uses both digital AND analog

I have a VERY strange gear setup, but i get some pretty good Satch Tones.
I use a Digitech RP50 which is plugged into some 30 year old speackers that are tube. I use a cheap volume pedal so I can use the whammy part of the RP and I use a dunlop Cry Baby.
I get some good JSX tone out of this IMO, so if you ask me you just need tubes and you got Satch's tones from his early amps and his JSX. I'd recomend a tube screamer if you dont wanna get an RP.
Yes i'm a tube tone feind lol

i think the tone is most in the hands then the guitar or amp... i saw joe playing in a valveking and the tone is always the same...

Actually, Satriani's main delay is a Chandler diigital delay, not an analog delay.
Personally, I prefer digital for high gain work - the main selling point for analog delays is their less efficient design leading them to slightly "round off" the high end further and further with each sucessive repeat. That sounds great for clean or low gain playing, but once you get up to a reasonable amount of drive, that turns to mud.
Digital delays are much clearer and cleaner, and also boost longer delay times. Msot good ones have EQ features that allow you to approximate a more analog sound, as well, so for me it's a no-brainer.

Joe has been using 2 Boss delays for some time now rather than the chandler delays. He uses a DD2 (older more analogue like digital delay) and a DD3 through the effects loop of the JSX. The chip of the 2 pedal differs slightly. I bought a modded DD3 on evil bay and it has a switch that gives it an analogue sound. The 2 pedals in series thru the JSX sounds spectacular!!

A question: if I buy two delay pedal (and set them for long delay and short delay), when I push one, the other one turn off? Satch maybe do this....Because I don't want to have both the two pedals on in the same time...

Actually, Satch DOES use two at the same time.
No, if you turn one on the other won't automatically turn off. However, there are a couple delays on the market where you can save multiple settings - I use a Line6 DL-4, which has three saved delay patches. I can jump from one to the next with the click of a button, which will give you the effect you're looking for.
The downside is while you can set the pedal as a whole so that when you turn the delay off the echoes continue to fade out naturally and trail away, you can't set it that way for individual patches. So, when I go from a super-ambient heavily delayed patch like I'd use for Ebow or volume swells to something with lower repeats and less feedback, the echoes from what I was previously playing die off immediately, which doesn't sound natural. So, I'm sort of in themarket for something else.
