Title: Joe's Tone
Description: Early Joe or new Joe?

tschommer - October 23, 2006 12:50 AM (GMT)
What era (or specific album if you wish) is your favorite for Joe's guitar sound. Try not to take into consideration the writing or composing, this is just about tone (but you are still free to choose CP if you want :D ). For me I have to say far and away new Joe. I love the sounds he's getting with the new JS head. He has always had a great guitar sound, but I just love the organic unprocessed sounds from Super Colossal, I think they are IMHO among the best guitar sounds ever recorded by anyone.

richardsim7 - October 23, 2006 12:55 AM (GMT)
Yeah, that JSX sure pumps out some beautiful tones :D

I like the Is There Love in Space album for tone in my opinion. Its sounds diffrent to the others...

kane_satriani - October 23, 2006 02:56 AM (GMT)
I love the amazing tone of the song Thinking of you, the guitar solo is amazing, i also love the tone of Rubina from not of this earth, there's some eral nice tones in Is there love in space? I don't like the tones on the new album to much to be honest.

hoiguy79 - October 23, 2006 05:19 AM (GMT)
I love de dark sound of the Strange Beautiful album, I think that album was the star for this new tone Joe has, It was a HUGE change from the sound of engine of creation or the LISF dvd.

motorcycle_driver - October 23, 2006 05:41 AM (GMT)
i love the CP tones...the octaver/whammy pedal toens were not of this earth!!! though i still feel that Love Thing is better in LISF than in CP.

I'm not madly in love with the chorused / Rockman type SWTA tones, and I think the distorted NOTE tones are a little too clean (the clean sounds are amazing though).

I really don't like Joe's newer half-distorted tones, like on the new album and SBM (think rhythm guitars on Belly Dancer). The word I hear in my head to describe them is "flat" although I don't mean flat as in sharp and flat. It just sounds a little lifeless to me. Maybe it's the Palmer Speaker Simulator, I don't know.

So, to answer your question () clean tones from NOTE, dirty tones from the newer stuff, and Ultimate Octave tones from CP.

I´m still getting used to Satch´s new Peavey Tone and I´m not 100% sure that I like it.
The Tone that I love is the Extremist Tone or on Time Machine.
I agree with Phrydom the SWTA sounds way to prosessed for my liking
I gotta be honest I´m not crazy about his tone on SC....

i still think that Crystal Planet was inspired by Joe's new hair style back then(get it?...'crystal planet')

chromeboy_1 - October 23, 2006 07:35 PM (GMT)
i really love the Flying in a blue dream and the extremist tone!

odd trio - October 23, 2006 08:18 PM (GMT)
fiabd and extremist , thats what i was gona say.but i would add strange beautiful to that. i think if i could fly was a good tone that would always stand up . not too crazy about super colossal. not bad , just not where you'd want to stay. to me , schenker and page , maybe schon , have favorite ''tones''. EJ , obviously , but i havent heard enough frquently.

satriani guy - October 23, 2006 08:21 PM (GMT)
yeah FIABD tone is good too, well i say good, theyre all good, but the tone in Flyin seems really sharp, it really cuts through the mix well
and as for sustain.. ..

odd trio - October 23, 2006 08:31 PM (GMT)
can't slow down'' is a ''hot for teacher equivalent'' for comparison. more space truckin' than earth and volcano van halen sound. but i guess he has to live up to alien status! great songs , both , possibly the shred templates.

It's all in the fingers...well, a combination of vintage Marshall and Fender amps (with jenson speakers), Strats, ES 335's, and his fingers....You could put him thru almost any set-up and it would still sound like him...

motorcycle_driver - October 23, 2006 08:59 PM (GMT)
now playing- sunnaround you-EJ

man, his voice is so soothing!!! im gonna make it a point to listen to him every nnight before i sleep.

Surfing With The Alien is my favorite. The sound of the tube amp in that album sounds so awsome. Ice 9 is a great example of that with the rythym guitar.

The JSX is pretty awsome i must say though ^_^

I'm really surprised that so many people have a negative opinion of the tones on SC. I was just listening to EOC today and I have to say that those are also some of my favorites. The tone he gets with the chording at the end of Champagne (starting with about 1 min. left) is just awesome.

odd trio - October 23, 2006 10:15 PM (GMT)
EOC is like he's trying to keep the JS innovation going. Sc sonds like less without having much of a presence. a raw album can still be energetic and interesting.

kane_satriani - October 24, 2006 01:26 AM (GMT)
In regards to EJ i'm pretty sure he has to different amps going at the smae time on different settings, thats what gives him is encredible tone. Check the various bootleg section i posted an awsome EJ vid, the sound quility is a little crunchy but it's the most insane and beautaful EJ i've heard.

EOC's tones were great too! they just fit the whole techno mood so well!

So So So True

chromeboy_1 - October 30, 2006 09:26 PM (GMT)
i had to say that i really like the tone of the devil's Slide Solo! B)

motorcycle_driver - October 30, 2006 09:30 PM (GMT)
the tone on AWMAWY is really good. kinda heavily distorted, but still, smooth and makes the sound sound really great!

Its because his tones are "normal" in my opinon. Apart from A cool New Way and super collosal there isnt many pedal effects and "Not of this Earth" type tones that make you go "thats satch clearly"

Crystal planet is his best tone works shame he doesnt constantly try to manipulate music in such a unique way like that more.
