The funny guy in Satch Tapes, the one from Spinal Tap, is just an actor.(rygelxvi)

Joe Satriani and I have at least one thing in common (no, it's not musical ability).

We both use Apple Macintosh computers in our personal and professional lives.
(Tschommer)

Jeff was a chicken in his previous live (quote from Joe), reffering to his collection of chickens.

(Tschommer)

Joe hates to do guitar instructional videos. and prefers fans watch his live concerts as they are more informative.
(M_D)

i once talked to someone who said his friend works at a computer store that joe comes by occasionally. i know a guy who works at a instrument repair place that specializes in acoustic string instruments , and he said joe dropped by one day. he said it was 2 years ago around itlis time.
(Odd Trio)

His very first album had an all white jacket with big black lettering on it that simply said JOE SATRIANI, and Joe himself has said that at the time, he couldn't hardly even give them away. It had 4 songs on it...Phrydom was talking about this very album in his last (I think) post on this thread, where he mentioned all sounds were made with Joe's guitar. He recorded it in their apartment. Now of course, these albums are more collector's items, and usually go for over $200 each on ebay!
(Cheese 101)

Joe wore Sponge Bob boxer shorts on his 2003 G3 tour with Steve and Yngwie, LOL! He said he likes to change some little thing up for each tour just to give him an edge...but for that particular tour, he changed more than one thing and it took him quite a few shows to really get comfortable so he could get "lost in the music" like he usually does. Plus....Steve and Yngwie walked in on him in nothing BUT those shorts one night after a show....you can just imagine...
(Cheese 101)

Another fact, the DiMarzio Fred pickup that Joe helped design is named after Fred Flintstone. When Joe was being interviewed with Steve Vai and this was mentioned Steve said "I can't wait till they get to BamBam".
(Phrydom)

Joe's first guitar was a Hagstrom electric guitar.
(M_D)

Flying in a blue dreamsold especially well in texas (Satriani Guy)

The photo shoot for Flying in a Blue Dream album cover was consistently troubled by bad lighting. everytime the photographer was about to take a snap, the lights would go low. so after a LONG time, the photographer took a look at the pics and liked the pics, one of which finally ended up as the cover!
(M_D)

Joe says only one swear word in the REEL Satriani documentary.
(SirChick)

Joe once said he likes to go food shopping, he gets energised by being around fresh fruit and vegetables.
(phrydom)

Joe was jogging one time and ran by a store which sold hair clippers. He bought a set and became a baldy.
(phrydom)

An effects pedal called a Chandler Tube Driver was a major part of the SWTA guitar sound, as was one or more Rockman units, and a NEVE microphone preamp.
(phrydom)

The Lizard Down The Throat technique was named by Joe for when he plays a note low on the neck, slides up the string and at the same time presses down on the vibrato bridge, attempting to keep the pitch the same. In the studio version of Ice 9 it almost sounds like it's backwards. (Last part isn't a fact per se - it's how it sounds to me)
(phrydom)

Towards the end of Joe's teaching with Steve Vai they would have long jam sessions, each with their back to the other. At key / interesting points they would both just look over the shoulder to the other in acknowledgment.
(phrydom)

Joe introduced Steve Vai to Frank Zappa's music.
(phrydom)

As he learned from Lennie Tristano, Joe would sometimes be harsh with his students. Joe has talked about many of his lessons with Lennie that lasted less than a minute. If Joe didn't play (or sing) something accurately first time, the lesson was over. Steve Vai can be seen and heard telling pretty much the same of Joe in The Satch Tapes.
(phrydom)

Headless Horseman was not played on a bass guitar. (That one surprised me a long time ago!)
(phrydom)

The character from the cover of Surfing with the alien is a character named the Silver Surfer From the comic Producers - Marvel (Satriani Guy)

While recording Not Of This Earth John Cuniberti's car was broken into. In the process of cleaning up the glass he cut his hands, and as Satriani was paying him per hour he had to splice together a track using his bloody fingers. (Satriani Guy)

In the liner notes of Not Of This Earth, Joe said that he was working on an album and also promised that it would turn heads, drop jaws and create world peace. Dunno bout world peace, but it surely did achieve the first two!
(M_D)

In addition to the obvious cover art and title track of Surfing with the Alien, the three tracks "Back to Shalla-Bal" and "The Power Cosmic (parts I & II)" are also references to the Silver Surfer. (Tschommer)

The Silver Surfer's real name is Norrin Radd, Shalla-Bal was Norrin's "one true love". The Power Cosmic is basically what Galactus used to turn Norrin into the Silver Surfer and it is the source of all of his power (great strength and ability to fly through space at light speed on a surf board).

...and finally, yes I am a comic book nerd.
(Tschommer)

Joe dipps his wrists in a bucket of warm water before going on stage. It makes warming up the hands easier.

Joe and Steve both had songs on the PS1 formula 1 Game
(Knob Head)

Joe was not actually aware of the SS' existance until
""I came up with the song title called "Surfing With the Alien" and it wasn't going to be the title of the album and I had no connection, nor did I even know who the Silver Surfer was. But, as I turned the album into the record company, I switched the title at the last minute to the one song "Surfing With the Alien" and its a funny story, but it's just coincidence. The product manager there is tall, a guy with long platinum blond hair. He used to be called the "Silver Surfer" when he was a disc jockey. So the first thing he said when he heard the album and saw the title, was that we should make some connection between my album and the silver surfer and he then educated me on who the Silver Surfer was. He knew where Marvel Comics was in Manhattan and so he just went down there and struck a deal to get this image on the cover. And, from there it was really my beginning to learn about the Silver Surfer Comic Strip and stuff. But what happened was the record came out, people just put my name and the Silver Surfer music together and 'you sound like that guy'. There are lots of songs that involve the world around, us and outerspace like that, but I guess the connection just kind of stuck. It doesn't help when you shave your head and put on some weird sunglasses.)
(Grudska)

Another quick fact: the title, Not of This Earth, came from a low-budget 1957 thriller of the same title that Joe and his friends memorized when he was in high school. In Joe's words, "I used the title as a wink and a nod, to let my friends know I hadn't forgotten them..."

The '57 version of the film was never released on VHS or DVD, supposedly because director Roger Corman wasn't happy with it.
(Gruska)

"Crowd Chant" was originally called "Party on the Enterprise" it was filled with sound effects taken from the original Star Trek series. The effects were removed and the title was changed at the last minute because they could not obtain the rights in time from the shows producers.
(Tschommer)

i remember reading somewhere he said he doesent like to hear he has great technique , he would rather hear someone say ''that's a great solo'' ...
(Odd Trio)

Joe and Steve used to drop acid in a (dry lake bed? dry river bed? empty lot? Dave Gruska, can you confirm?). They called that place / experience the Sea Of Emotion.
(Phrydom)

random fact: the original cover of NOTE was done by Rubina, and the only reason they had to change the cover is because they lost the original print.(Zen Monkey)

random fact #2: Joe came up with the title 'The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing' while he was on the phone to his brother. He was sketching while he was talking and drew a potato head. Underneath it he wrote 'The Mystical Potato Head'. Elsewhere on the sheet of paper he wrote 'Groove Thing' as a reference for a possible song title - he put 2 and 2 together, and the rest is history...(Zen Monkey)

random fact #3: Joe is a keen wine connoisseur, but he also has a soft spot for Pilsner Urquell (a Czech lager) and Theakston's Old Peculier (a rather hefty dark ale from Yorkshire)(Zen Monkey)

when neal schon was on ''rockline'' in '89 promoting his solo album, he was asked by coburn , who he thought was the current guitarist he liked . schon said , ''as far as having it all covered , joe satriani''... (Odd Trio)

when Santana released Supernatural, he was interviewed by Channel [V], and when asked who he thinks are the best guitarists in this time, he mentioned Joe Satriani.
Motorcycle_Driver)

when Santana released Supernatural, he was interviewed by Channel [V], and when asked who he thinks are the best guitarists in this time, he mentioned Joe Satriani.(Phrydom)

Joe uses luminous gaffa / masking tape on his pedals when playing live so he can tell which pedal is which before he stomps on it.(Phrydom)

Joe has a Fender Precision bass in his (small but very well equipped) home studio guitar rack. (Phrydom)

Fact: Joe uses a symmetrical scale in Luminous Flesh Giants.

Now THAT is a big post!

Anybody can write QUOTE around something. I like to hear it direct from the source.

In the first 90 seconds of this video you can see and hear Joe say these words

So, September 18th, 1970... Jimi Hendrix dies, I'm still on the football team at that moment, but as soon as I hear about it I take my helmet off and go back to the gym, confront the coach, and tell him I'm quitting the football team, and in a moment of brilliance he just gives me one look and says 'OK'

Then buy the Uk Magazine called Guitars from last year and read the quote i showed you.

The cover is Joe with the crystal planet guitar infront of his face. Thats where the quote is from. The interview tracked on about Joe wanting to do something with football. And then he answers with what i showed you.

PhryDom - October 29, 2006 03:06 PM (GMT)
Topic pinned.

I think both are true - SirChick you might as well re-edit.

Fremont, Nebraska: Joe, I've read a number of interviews in which you talk about quitting the football team in High School after Hendrix's death, but that's about all I've ever read about your younger days. Were you involved in music classes in high school (Choir, Band, Theory, etc.). Did your parents encourage your musical direction growing up? Was Rubina a high school sweetheart?

Joe Satriani: Yes. I studied drums for two years starting at the age of nine, and I switched to guitar at 14. I studied two years of music theory in high school. I was on the fitness team, and we won the national championship two years in a row. The second year, I left because they wanted me to cut my hair and I wouldn't do it.

But it was Hendrix' death that made him pursue his musical career. Shame something so tragic created something so wonderful, IMHO

Joes first album was released in 1986 but there are some very rare copies of albums before this album was released,no pictures exist

I think this picture might be from it...

I am quite possibly completely wrong though, I just never see that first picture anywhere.

Yes, that's the real first cover. I've got the original printing myself on vinyl. I picked it up for a few bucks. Somebody told me it was worth a ton, so I checked it out on eBay - copies were going for about $5 when I checked last year...

Even on Joe's brand new JS1200's and JS1000's he has the old original Ibanez Edge trems installed even though they have nor been manufactured for over 10 years. Presumably Joe does not like change.

Joe hates to do guitar instructional videos. and prefers fans watch his live concerts as they are more informative.

The Power Cosmic was originally a guitar-only piece, written and recorded for Guitar Player magazine and released as a flexible record with the magazine. The entire piece is played with one hand only.

I have this track if any one wants me to bootleg. sorry for off-topic.

i once talked to someone who said his friend works at a computer store that joe comes by occasionally. i know a guy who works at a instrument repair place that specializes in acoustic string instruments , and he said joe dropped by one day. he said it was 2 years ago around itlis time.

Sorry...gotta correct a "fact" right from the beginning...Joe was born on July 15th, 1956, not July 20th.

There are so many facts out there about Joe...and my head is swimming with them....but one of my favorties is that he wore Sponge Bob boxer shorts on his 2003 G3 tour with Steve and Yngwie, LOL! He said he likes to change some little thing up for each tour just to give him an edge...but for that particular tour, he changed more than one thing and it took him quite a few shows to really get comfortable so he could get "lost in the music" like he usually does. Plus....Steve and Yngwie walked in on him in nothing BUT those shorts one night after a show....you can just imagine....

thanks Trace, somehow the 20th didn't sound right in my head but I couldn't be arsed Googling

Another fact, the DiMarzio Fred pickup that Joe helped design is named after Fred Flintstone. When Joe was being interviewed with Steve Vai and this was mentioned Steve said "I can't wait till they get to BamBam".

Joe's first guitar was a Hagstrom electric guitar.

Flying in a blue dreamsold especially well in texas

The photo shoot for Flying in a Blue Dream album cover was consistently troubled by bad lighting. everytime the photographer was about to take a snap, the lights would go low. so after a LONG time, the photographer took a look at the pics and liked the pics, one of which finally ended up as the cover!

Joe says only one swear word in the REEL Satriani documentary.

PhryDom - October 31, 2006 08:06 PM (GMT)
If that's true (not saying I don't believe you!) that is very interesting!

Not sure if this is the case now, but Joe once said he likes to go food shopping, he gets energised by being around fresh fruit and vegetables.

Joe was jogging one time and ran by a store which sold hair clippers. He bought a set and became a baldy.

An effects pedal called a Chandler Tube Driver was a major part of the SWTA guitar sound, as was one or more Rockman units, and a NEVE microphone preamp.

Towards the end of Joe's teaching with Steve Vai they would have long jam sessions, each with their back to the other. At key / interesting points they would both just look over the shoulder to the other in acknowledgment.

Joe introduced Steve Vai to Frank Zappa's music.

Headless Horseman was not played on a bass guitar. (That one surprised me a long time ago!)

The character from the cover of Surfing with the alien is a character named the Silver Surfer From the comic Producers - Marvel

While recording Not Of This Earth John Cuniberti's car was broken into. In the process of cleaning up the glass he cut his hands, and as Satriani was paying him per hour he had to splice together a track using his bloody fingers.

:o :o :o

motorcycle_driver - October 31, 2006 10:22 PM (GMT)
In the liner notes of Not Of This Earth, Joe said that he was working on an album and also promised that it would turn heads, drop jaws and create world peace. Dunno bout world peace, but it surely did achieve the first two!

tschommer - November 1, 2006 01:44 PM (GMT)
In addition to the obvious cover art and title track of Surfing with the Alien, the three tracks "Back to Shalla-Bal" and "The Power Cosmic (parts I & II)" are also references to the Silver Surfer.
