Very cool, and it has a price too. Seems a bit much when you can get this:
Peavey Royal 8for half the price. I have found this in the UK for £120. So I will be investing in one as soon as they get them in. I had a feeling the Mini Colossal was going to be a pricey amp.
Thanks for the heads up Axe.
chromeboy_1 - January 18, 2007 02:05 PM (GMT)
hum may be but what about the sound ?
i think JSX have a better potential!
Satch9 - January 18, 2007 10:48 PM (GMT)
I think most of us would say that because we are all accustomed to satchs awesome tone!

That Royal 8 seems pretty cool, but it's missing some key features that make the Mini Colossal such a cool amp. I would like to A/B them and see how close they are in sound.

I'd love to get either of the amps really...i love the sound from a small amp rather than a huge one (maybe cause i play mostly blues). I'd love to buy the Royal King 8 man...the pricing is'nt bad either...i only wish it had a bass and treble control on it.

Still no sound clips at the Peavey site, but this was posted on the Peavey web site in the amp forum by a Peavey customer service rep. A little more info about the amp and some very nice comments about Joe and his professionalism.
________
It is a great sounding little amp. I haven't done any recording with it, but as Kerry said that is where it would really shine in my opinion. I could also see a lot of situations where it would make a fine amp for live gigs.
Another point that seems to be missed a lot, is that it is a Joe Satriani SIGNATURE model.
Joe Satriani has been great for Peavey. He is responsive, supportive, eager to please, and very helpful and knowledgeable about what we wants. Got a photo shoot, trade show, etc., he's there. He shows up on time, and ready to work whenever he is called on.
He is also very hands on and decisive when it comes to designs and features he wants. I hear he even has the engineers teaching him electronics and how read schematics so he can better understand what is going on in the design process. In other words, the guy is a consummate Pro.
The JSX line sounds fantastic and sells tons. The Mini Colossal was designed the way it is, because that is what Joe wanted, and why not? The 8" speaker is what Joe wanted, no reverb is what Joe wanted, tremolo is what Joe wanted. You get the idea.
Even if we don't sell ten million of them, it was still worth it because Joe deserves it. I expect the amp to do very well, once it gets out there. It may not do the numbers of the less expensive models like the Royal 8 or Windsor Studio, but it should hold it's own. It sounds great, is surprisingly versatile, and is made in the USA. Kinda hard to argue with that...
My 2 cents...

I don't get why Joe doesn't like re verb, the mini-colossal, and the JSX head aint' got it, however... I like the fact that the JSX combo has reverb though.

It does have tremolo though, and like the Roger from Peavey said the amp has what Joe wants it to have. He wanted tremolo not reverb so that's what he got.
Axeshredder - February 9, 2007 12:26 AM (GMT)
when does joe ever use tremelo?..lol
tschommer - February 9, 2007 12:49 AM (GMT)
...well according to Peavey he wanted it on his new amp, so maybe we will hear some on his next release.
FlexX - February 28, 2007 03:03 PM (GMT)

I certainly won't be buying one now that i've seen the price of £449! What a rip-off!! £449 for a 5w amp
tschommer - February 28, 2007 10:53 PM (GMT)
Cool! I'm really surprised that there are no sound clips on Peavey's web site yet.
richardsim7 - March 1, 2007 09:25 AM (GMT)

Well, more wattage doesn't equal better sound.
I always wanted a tube amp that is usable without having ear bleeding volume.
Axeshredder - March 5, 2007 06:12 PM (GMT)
Joes comments were he wanted a "Class A" amplifier.....i dont know what that is or the difference....once answered maybe the price makes sense?

Amplifier classes
Amplifiers are commonly classified by the conduction angle (sometimes known as 'angle of flow') of the input signal through the amplifying device; see electronic amplifier.
Class A
Where efficiency is not a consideration, most small signal linear amplifiers are designed as Class A, which means that the output devices are always in the conduction region. Class A amplifiers are typically more linear and less complex than other types, but are very inefficient. This type of amplifier is most commonly used in small-signal stages or for low-power applications (such as driving headphones).

I didn't know what it was either. But yeah what he meant was that he wanted a low watt tube amp in his JSX brand.

True, but that price is ridiculous considering that it's cheaper for me to buy a US model, ship over from there and pay the tax. I was expecting a slight mark up because it is one of Joe's signature amps, but £449?? Come on, why pay that when you can pick up another 5w class A Peavey amp for a third of that price? If i'm going to have to pay that kind of money for a quality low wattage amp, then I would most likely choose a Cornford Harlequin ;)

I also think it's overpriced, but only when you get to hear it you will know if it's worth the money.
If you could dial in the perfect Satch tone with it, it might be.
al_peggio - March 7, 2007 01:32 PM (GMT)
Btw, if you listen to the Nascar Soundtracks I thought I heard a small amount of tremolo in there. Listen to "Let's Roll". Even if that doesn't say much.
Also have someone heard the Peavey Royal 8 in action? I'm thinking of getting one, the Mini Colossal is even more expensive where I live.
twinamp - March 13, 2007 04:19 PM (GMT)
The demo is avalible in the Peavey.com .It's from Satch....
Axeshredder - March 13, 2007 04:30 PM (GMT)

Satch Boogie - March 13, 2007 05:10 PM (GMT)
Joe, it's on Peavey's home page
PeaveyYou've got to use the Radio Peavey player at the bottom right of the page and go through the demos until you get to the Mini Colossal one ;)
tschommer - March 14, 2007 12:44 AM (GMT)
Wow, I love that track!! I think there might be a Mini Colossal in my future!!
Matt08642 - March 15, 2007 07:11 AM (GMT)
I tried the Royal 8 recently and it sounded like complete ass. Terrible. I wish I could have tried a mini JSX :(
kane_satriani - March 15, 2007 11:43 AM (GMT)

Thanks for letting me know. I guess if I'm going to buy a Class A amp the Mini Colossal is an option.
Judging from the song I like the sound of it.

Found an interesting quote from an interview:
| QUOTE |
You used a prototype of a mini-amp you’re working on too?
Yeah on Movin’ On I played through this small prototype mini-colossal amp that we’re developing and that is coming out this January with Peavey. It is just five watts, class A with a really simple head with a little 8” inch speaker thing. I just used the JS1200 and I had the amp cranked but I took the volume control, popped up the high bypass filter and then turned down the volume down to two. So it almost sounds like a Telecaster-Stratocaster or something like going into a Deluxe Reverb. That is how I did the rhythm tracks for the song. It’s very rock and roll, Stones like sounding but they’re chimey. |

http://www.peavey.comLook at the music player bottom right... scroll through the music till you find joe's song in the music player... reminds me a bit of his NASCAR tracks.... pretty good :)

Wow...what a beautiful sounding amp...I wonder who´s playing the drums....
Avenyr - November 7, 2007 04:36 PM (GMT)
I wanted a small tube practice amp and I thought the Mini-Colossal would be good despite the high price tag. I am in no way near what would someone consider good or "intermediate" in kind of playing but I really love the warm dark tone that it provides. I've been having an insane amount of trouble using pedals though but I will make a thread on this issue because I don't think it is related to the amp per se but more problably my lack of knowledge.
So far, Mini-Colossal + JS1000 sounds really goooood!
Avenyr - January 2, 2008 09:17 PM (GMT)
I have been looking for a way to put some EQ through the Mini-Colossal and tried out the Boss GE-7. I didn't have much time to play with it but it seemed interesting. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to help model the frequencies of the amp or if there is something else out there.
eddie knuckles - January 3, 2008 08:18 AM (GMT)
I just got my mini colossal, and I must say, I'm impressed. I do wish it had reverb, but I patched my J-Station through it and it works just fine. I was a Fender Deluxe reverb guy in my heyday, and have been playing out of a small solid state of late. The Mini Colossal gives me that warm and phat sound from days of yore... The trem is impressive when I plug in my lap steel and do a little high lonesome stuff... My strat sounds great, and my Peavey JF1-ex humbucker gives me from Pat Metheney to Dickie Betts with a little dial in from the treble on the guitar to a little tweaking on the amp. This thing is plenty loud, and would like to by a 1x12 or 2x12 to throw underneath. I recorded with the XLR out to the soundcard in my computer and got true amp tone I was playing, from my nylon string to my JF1. This amp is way too cool. Thanks guys!!
