Title: The Squares
GGoTr - June 28, 2005 05:36 PM (GMT)
Hi,
I only know that Joe played in a band called 'The Squares' in the early 80's. And I found a song called 'Squares (With Joe Satriani) - 01 Give It Up.mp3'. Don't know if it's really Joe with the squares. Someone knows a bit more about the mystery or maybe has a good site about that topic. Maybe some songs, pictures from that period?
thx guys... :D :D :D
Nice to have a board, just ask that question...
Got that Info from a homepage:
1980 to 1985
The Squares
People involved
Joe Satriani (gtr); plus two other blokes.
A power-pop trio initiated by Satriani. They toured clubs throughout the States but eventually folded due to lack of proper success.

Nice find and cool info! I know very little about this and I've heard it was his earlier band but never heard anything. ;)

Joe Satriani grew up in New York. He has worked as a session musician in Japan. He has given guitar lessons to such people as Kirk Hammett, Charlie Hunter, and Steve Vai. After a failed band, the Squares, he released a solo album, Joe Satriani. After one album with the Greg Kihn Band, Joe released Not of This Earth, which was marginal, especially compared with Surfing with the Alien, which was the following album. This album enjoyed huge success and crossed over onto the pop charts, even though there were no vocals on the entire album. After doing some work with Mick Jagger's solo band, he released Flying in a Blue Dream in the early 90's. In 1994, he replaced Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple, but has since released more solo material. Joe Satriani is one of the most versatile guitarists around today.

Hi,
thx for the answer. I know most the things. Got the Cd with Greg Kihn, got the bootlegs with Deep Purple and Jagger, but I'm missing Information on the Squares Band.
You wrote after a failed band. So was it just a try? Nothing released? No gigs? No Pictures?
Anyones knows more?

From 1979 trough '84, Satch played with a much-heralded but ultimately unsigned power pop trio, The Squares. Andy Milton on bass, Jeff Campitelli on drums and Joe on Guitar.
Two local “Power Pop” bands dominated the local club scene, the Squares featuring Joe Satriani and the Rubinoos. John Cuniberti was in around '80 the live sound guy for the Squares and sometimes the Rubinoos who often played on the same bill.
The band neared the end of fourth year together without signing any contract, and at the end of '83 and after a long period of reherasal they decided to take a 3 weeks break.
During this period, Joe decided to realize his own project, and started to record his experimental LP "JOE SATRIANI" at Likewise studios ....
You know the rest ...
Unfortunately, its really hard to find any song of the trio. They realized a 5 tracks demo tape, a guy in a Google post was selling it !
I contacted the buyer, he told me that he was going to send me samples, i'm still waiting ....
2 songs are available on the web :
"follow that heart" and "Give it up"
About this last one, the guy told me that this came from a battle of the band that joe and the squares did a long time ago !

Yeah,
thx a lot GuitarPlanet. That is a cool info. Couldn't find such detailed information. And we know the rest for sure. Found 'Give it up' on the Internet, and it was also posted here on the board. The other song wasn't around on the net.
I can see the light in The Squares tunnel now, thx...
