Title: Playing Styles
Description: what's your style?
Satch2004 - February 9, 2007 12:57 AM (GMT)
I made this because i've noticed that everyone has a different playing style and I would like to learn about them. I for example have a more fast/variation type style because of influences like Satriani and The Mars Volta.
Also, i'd like to learn about your different methods and ways of playing things differently, such as holding a guitar pick a certain way or playing a certain note combination.
(Sorry if this is a repeated post, but the search engine never will work for me)

Im pretty much the same, i'm very much into legato type playing like Satriani but like everyone I have my own little nuances!
I hold the pick very deep into it so that im always ready for some squealing pinch harmonics which is easier all round I think, I have the guitar around the waist area to allow ease of playing fast passages! Not to low... not to high!
I also always rest my little finger just next to the bridge when I play, I've never been able to just play a solo etc without resting my little finger on something, the only time it'll get moved is when I use the whammy bar or need to do some two-hand tapping! Theres not much more than that really.
As far as my approach to how I play things I prefer to pay more attention to the actualy feel and dynamics of a piece before I actually get to the note to note learning of a song... I believe its more interesting for people if they experience the song first hand to get a feel and inspiration for the song and then have the drive to go out there and learn it.
Thats all there is from me now! Id go intro strumming, sweeping etc techniques but I gotta be up for work soon so Im gonna go to bed! :P
... But thats my main points! The most important thing is to be comfortable with what you are playing and enjoy yourself! Thats what Its all about... That and the strange beautiful music!

i know what Satch9 is talking about when he mentioned the little finger thing,, EXACTLY the same here,,
playing things differently,,,,hmmmm, ive grown a really bad habit of holding the whammy in my middle two fingers ALL the time, it looks so awkward but doesnt seem too bad for me, because of a main influance of satriani and vai i do alot of whammy baring
cant think of anything else
hope this helps on your quest for wierdness Mr Spock

i basically like to play a lot of pentatonic stuff! those common blues 'licks' that almost everyone does....then of course playin arounds with scales n stuff...not too complex ones...
i actually rest both my pinky and the ring finger of my right hand on the pickguard while playing. i've kinda gotten used to it!
i also know a bunch of progresssive sstuff....basically Dream Theater stuff....so i try to do a lot of 'shreds' and trem ficking of whatever it's called!

i use my little finer alot! so i never rest it. I tend to bend using the little finger like dime bag Darrell does, which is where i learnt it from. try getting a full bend with your small finger ;) took me ages to get it with vibrato but helps to do sum different kinda bend licks.

errr... everyone else talking about the picking hand :-/

Oh lmao my bad !
with picking i keep the fingers other than thumb and middle finger free to move around so that i can touch the other strings when bending or vibrato'in to keep them silent. And also encase i want to finger pick the odd note. Though i taught myself lots of warm up excercises so i could move the fingers whilst picking at same time. It was hard for a while but you get used to it like anything else.

I once tried playing in the weird way that Matry friedman plays. Look at a video for him and see how it holds the pick....
it makes no sense at all to me.
other than that, I'm sort of [at least I see myself] somewhere between a lesser combo of satch/dream theater/srv :P

Yeah his right hand technique looks retarded, I don't get how he mute the strings picking that way would allow for some nasty feedback you would think.
