Danny Danzi -Danziland just arrived today from the man himself just incredible player and songwriter. I know him from 6stringheaven and the guy is funny and very approachable with questions. He also has some videos on youtube under the name Majichands

Andy timmons is amazing,

I do not why, I have never liked Allan Holdsworth, I respect him. However, I tried listening to him, and I just don't get it.

Andres Segovia (Classical Recorded from about 1930 - 1970)
George Lynch
Michael Schenker
Jimi Hendrix
Django Reinhardt (20s era Jazz)
Wes Montgomery (Jazz one of Joe's Faves)

mouhsen - April 6, 2007 11:28 PM (GMT)
Michael Schenker....

can you give me an example of something standout for him. I remember listening to him in the Michael Schenker band... and it didn't catch my attention, maybe I had heard some work that was not representative of his work.

I had a friend that had never heard of Joe, and his first song listening to was Woodstock jam.... IMHO, that is probably the only song for Joe that I hate.

What MSG album did you hear? I love his early stuff, but the newer MSG is not great IMHO. I would start with UFOs Strangers in the Night, one of my favorite live albums ever. For studio UFO CDs I like Lights Out and Phenomenon. For solo stuff I love his first CD "The Michael Schenker Group" and his 2nd M.S.G. is also great. If you are just looking to get into some of his best stuff, I have a CD called "Michael Schenker Portfolio" that has some of some his best UFO and solo stuff.

...and don't forget Randy Rhoads!!! The first two Ozzy solo albums are both brilliant. Just avoid the re-masters, because Sharon Osbourne (BITCH!!) replaced the original drum and bass tracks with new inferior ones to avoid having to pay royalties to Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake. Randy is one of the most brilliant composers in the history of rock IMHO.

jason becker
marty friedman (solo & megadeth)
stoney curtis
tak matsumoto

jeff beck !

mouhsen - April 17, 2007 07:17 PM (GMT)
stoney curtis
tak matsumoto

can you tell me about them?

I personally only like Marty Friedman's old solo stuff, I didn't like his work after
True Obsessions

I had an idea last December, but never got round to doing anything about it :(

I thought it would be great for the source RR tracks from the master tapes to be made available in some kind of box set with transcriptions to remember 25 years since he died.

I guess we missed the 25 year anniversary, but I still think it's a great idea. Listen to the original version (in different speeds?) and learn from a master.

Sorry to hijack the thread... here're some more guitarists to check out

(re: Schenker - definitely check out Strangers In The Night, he was 19 at the time!)

Joe Pass - I have an instructional vid of his, man he is SO down to earth, but jaw-dropping!

Alex Lifeson - he has done so much for the textural guitar approach (think Andy Summers, Tom Morello, The Edge) but also kicks some mean arse in solos when the track requires, check out Limelight, La Villa Strangiato, Kid Gloves

speaking of which, check out Andy Summers' NON-police work. Very tasty.

And Tom Morello deserves a thread all of his own.

odd trio - April 18, 2007 08:40 PM (GMT)
mick jones - foreigner and solo.

That would be really cool!! I have always wanted to hear some of the Randy / Ozzy music played by a full symphony orchestra, especially Diary of a Madman.

Tak is a guitar player from japan, he's well known in asia. His main project is B'Z, a huge selling pop band in japan. I think his solo work is much better (e.g. dragon from the west). If you like exotic soloing/scales you should check him out...

Stanley Jordan, is a great jazz player who can play chords and melodies at the same time by tapping with both hands.

Yes, the Edge is a great player, Andy Summers of the Police is another great player.

Has anyone mentioned Alex Lifeson from Rush yet?

PhryDom - April 24, 2007 02:28 AM (GMT)

Joe Pass & Chet Atkins.

Take a listen to Danny Gatton if you want to hear some mind boggling country shred.

John 5 is also a great all all around player country, jazz and metal.
