Title: Jsx Tubes
Description: what do you recomend
mouhsen - June 13, 2007 03:48 AM (GMT)
Hi, I've read up quite a bit on how changing the tubes on the JSX amp can improve the tone of the amp. I would like to know if anybody has done so, and what would be their recomendations as I am very new to tubes & tube amps.
thanks.

JSX comes with EL34's right? I'd be interested to see what it sounds like with 6L6's :)

What do you mean different tubes? Different type or different brand? Can it do rebiasing? Can it do what Richard says or just put a different EL34 on it?
If you can change the type the potentials are vast. Basically the only good advice is take it to a shop and test tubes because the result is eventually objective. I've had experience with a THD Univalve. Every change of tube creates a new sound.

I would suggest that you post this directly at the Peavey forums, just because you will get a lot more answers. They probably already even have several threads on this topic.

you can use EL34 or 6L6's. I was hoping that somebody has the amp and would give his personal experience. I will look at the peavey forums too. thanks.

Tung-Sols seem to be the valve of choice at the moment. I keep hearing great things about them.

I recently put in JJ Tesla EL 34L and I am simply amazed at how good the amp sounds now...not that it didn't sound good before, but it was time for a retube...
The mids are much better defined now and stronger also, not a little "dirty" like they were before...and low end is as big as you can get out of an EL 34 tube... JJ EL 34L is about 20% "stronger" and has way more "headroom" than a regular EL34 tube.
So basically If you like that strong-upper mid tone, and want your amp to sound more like a Marshall get an EL34's...and if you like your mids to be low and have a "booming" low like a Mesa Boogie Rectifier maybe, then you should get 6L6's .
It all depends on your personal preference in the end...as for the tube manufacturers JJ Tesla has so far been the best for me...they make the best EL 34's now (in my opinion), and their 6L6's are amazing too (I have them in my Twin Reverb) ...as for the preamp tubes, I cannot help you there since I haven't yet replaced the ones I have now...the should probably last for 2, maybe 3 more years because they usually last much much longer then power tubes...
I hope I have been helpful! :beer3:

I spoke to Watford valves the other day about changing valves in my JSX and was told that when Satch came to the Uk recently, he asked for these in his amps...
