Title: Old Songs With Very Nice Solos

Wajahat - July 28, 2007 04:57 AM (GMT)
Apart from the instrumental rock artists, from time to time many bands have also produced songs with awesome guitar solos in em. Lets make a list of which tracks with vocals on em have also got awesome solos.

For instance

* Deep Purple - Sweet Child In Time
* Rainbow - Gates of Babylon
* Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
* Rainbow - Stargazer
* Dokken - Never Unchain the Night

Everybody please patch in with your list too.

?! From time to time?
I would not say that. I actually do not listen to Joe for example because of the solos but of everything else.
Anyways, back on the track I would say that many many many songs have awesome solos in them.
I cannot come up with a whole list right now as it will be too long, but I have to note the guy from my avatar <---- for actually making me picking up the guitar...
Other than many of his solos just a few

Judas Priest - Beyond the Realms of Death (just an awesome solo)
Brian May - .....
Randy Rhodes (Ozzy) - Crazy Train comes up, but many more... thus I get to
Zakk Wylde (Ozzy) - Tomorrow - simple but really nice IMO
Dimebag Darell (Pantera) - Cemetery Gates, Planet Caravan (originally by Iommi)
Slash - many many
Thunderstone - Tool of the Devil, Land of Innnocence
Godsmack - Re-Align, Changes
Grave Digger - Twilight of the Gods
Iced Earth - Melancholy
In Flames - The Jester's Dance
Sinergy - Laid to Rest
Clapton - ........
Hendrix - ........

I can probably continue much more but I thing you got what I like :P

add ''dirty white boy'' to that. that guy has the best pure rock tones IMO this stuff sounds better in analog cassete or vinyl.

Wajahat - July 30, 2007 06:16 AM (GMT)

* DIO - Rock n Roll
* Black Sabbath - Fairies Wear Boots
* OutWorld - City of the Dead
* ACDC - Thunderstruck

pink floyd - sorrow
pink floyd - money

The fact that Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" has not been mentioned thus far in the thread is, frankly, a travesty. That second solo is absolutely perfect.

tschommer - July 30, 2007 09:38 PM (GMT)
The solo in Stairway to Heaven is one of my all time favorites.

motorcycle_driver - July 31, 2007 07:25 AM (GMT)
no Sultans of Swing??? that's one of the sweetest solo's ive ever heard!

gruskada - July 31, 2007 09:07 PM (GMT)
Cult of Personality - Living Colour
Listening to this was one of the first times I really listened to guitar, and thought, wow, what a cool instrument.

Return To Serenity - Testament
I love the way this keeps building and getting heavier, like a storm brewing, getting unbearable, then quieting down - it fits the song perfectly. The guitar intro to the song is very cool as well.

Heart Shaped Box - Nirvana
I don't know why, but the pedal change (or whatever it is) in the middle of the solo seems like the greatest guitar solo idea ever to me.

Red Rain (version from Secret World Live) - Peter Gabriel
It's actually a bass solo, multiple ones, by Tony Levin (of King Crimson). I really like the way the bass cuts through the mix, but isn't obnoxious. You can tell right away it's Tony Levin. Very understated, but it's the coolest sound.

Can't think of any more right now.

Led Zepplin - Whole Lotta Love

Drew - August 29, 2007 03:56 PM (GMT)
"Time" deserves a nod too - in fact, off the top of my head I think I prefer the lead break to "Have a Cigar." Which, of course, also rules - basically, let's just nominate the collected works of David Gilmour and be done with it. lol:

I was out jogging today and the song "Gonna Fly Now" from the original Rocky movie came on my iPod. I actually has a very cool and tasty guitar solo. I can't seem to find out who played it though, I'm guessing that it was a studio musician that I have never heard of though.

Spider - January 11, 2008 07:46 PM (GMT)
Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons (solo in 15minute).

Definately Iron Maiden - Powerslave

GoDrex - January 28, 2008 01:45 AM (GMT)
Let's see, I'll try to think of some not mentioned...

VH - "Hear About It Later" - from Fair Warning. More cowbell! Also "One Foot Out the Door" - the solo is insane.

FZ - "Inca Roads." Mindblowing...

Pantera - "Live in a Hole" - I love how the rhythm section speeds up with the solo - just totally intense. Also "Regular People." I love that they didn't record a rhythm guitar part.

Black Sabbath - Warning - the long extended solo is one of my favorite guitar things ever. It was a big influence on me.

King's X - Fall On Me - - just about anything Ty Tabor does sounds great to me. Amazing tone.

Megadeth - Holy Wars - of course.

german1988 - February 24, 2008 11:39 AM (GMT)
Led Zeppelin - Since I've been loving you & Stairway to heaven from live The Song Remains The Same (2007 remaster)

Eddie Van Halen - Eruption, Spanish fly, Cathedral
Jimi Hendrix - Villanova junction studio jam (longest available, outtakes 1968-70)
Gary Moore - Dirty fingers
