Title: Most Musical Guitarist ?
Wajahat - August 13, 2007 05:10 AM (GMT)
Who would you say is the guitarist with the most feel ? After Satch Of Course.
I'd give my vote to John Petrucci.
al_peggio - August 13, 2007 11:16 AM (GMT)
Paul Gilbert is up there in my book, I think he excels Satch when it comes to live improvising, however in studio I favor Satriani more..
mouhsen - August 16, 2007 05:40 AM (GMT)
my fav at the moment is guthrie govan. just an absolute monster in every respect.

Pre his "Let's collaborate with every pop star I can!" phase, sure, he had some great feel to his playing. These days, barring the occasional inspired lead ("Put Your Lights On" rules), he's playing crap - just falling back on the same five licks he's used all his career and chaining them together without even really paying attention to the backing. The Michelle Branch track, I think, sounds like he walked into the studio, the engineer hit "record" without even bothering to play Carlos the track beforehand, and Santana just winged it. Then, the engineer said, "Ok, you're santana, that's a wrap." that's the only way he could possibly have played something so mindless and cliche'd. :/

can you pick apart solos on ''santana III''. which one is carlos or neal schon? its difficult sometimes, but schon played ''everybody's everything''. did schon play one of ''no one to depend on''? schon played outro ''touissant'' solo.i can tell his style there for sure. thats a fun album to try to figure out...

I'm actually surprised to read that people think that John Petrucci has feel. Well, if that's how you honestly feel I can't argue. To me, he's extremely cold.
But I'm going to say EVH. He ruled from '78 to '84.

I've heard that before. I don't think he has feel.
mouhsen - September 14, 2007 02:01 AM (GMT)
it's all a matter of taste.

...and then sucked badly from '85 through 2007 and onward. The man is a shadow of his former self.
Petrucci is another guy you almost have to break down by era, and sometimes even by album/track. "Images and Words" has some great, memorable leads on it, the solo on "Through Her Eyes" would do Beck or SRV proud, and on the Dark Side of the Moon official bootleg, he proves he's one of the few guys who can really do Gilmour justice. He's got a hell of a lot of feel and musicality to his playing.
...Of course, he's also the guy who recorded all the lead breaks on Train of Thought. You win some and lose some. *shrug*

just been watching paul gilberts get out of my yard instructional dvd, and well he knows a lot of cool techniques and a lot of theory...
SirChick - January 9, 2008 01:20 AM (GMT)
Eric Johnson
Satch
Vai
Timmons
Gilmour
Gilbert
Petrucci
Santana
EVH
SRV
Hendrix
Not one of them are even close to being the same as each other .. there fore they are all equally musical in their own gifted way.
I would like to think how ever that Hendrix is what pushed most of those guys to be inspired.. so ill say Hendrix. Without Hendrix.. satch wouldn't be a guitarist. And neither would vai or they might have been but they would not have resulted like they did now.
The_Alien - January 9, 2008 04:49 PM (GMT)
i also like Neil Young's guitar playing. the acoustic is excellent, the electric can be really good too, although he's prone to being particularly unmusical and extremely screechy and eardrum destroying.
Live at Massey Hall, WELD and Year of the Horse showcase Neil Playing the guitar well. i stand by Gilmour as #1, but Young is up there as far as being musical goes.
Prestige - January 9, 2008 05:18 PM (GMT)
ow am i forgetting michael hedges!
Spider - January 9, 2008 06:38 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure about Gilbert and his feeling...

My favorite guitarist is Jeff Beck, so I guess I find him the most musical - though I love Frank Zappa's style even though it's harder to listen to at first. Jeff Beck has the best feel and vibrato and vibrato bar use I've ever heard. Zappa, though not a virtuoso, is the most interesting for me listen to. Tons of attitude and a fearless improviser.
guitarist234 - January 28, 2008 10:40 AM (GMT)
I'd like to give a nod to Mike Keneally - fantastically musical and frighteningly skillful...for my money the true carrier of Frank Zappa's flame...
