Title: Joe's Old Strats
Description: before JS's

dataduffy - October 29, 2007 01:32 AM (GMT)
Does anyone remember the hand painted strat bodies, with the ibanez necks that Joe used before the JS's?
I used to have a guitar magazine from the Uk years ago ,with him on the cover with two of these guitars.

Anyone have any pics?

I don't think his older guitars had Ibanez necks, I'm pretty sure they were mongrel Strats, I think that Joe put them together himself using Chandler parts. There was a thread here a while back that detailed his guitar collection.

I've only found one pic so far on the net. Its the first mag cover on the link below.
I am fairly sure that they were fitted with Ibanez necks (But it was 19 years ago when I read this magazine, so who knows ! )

This years August issue of Guitar Player magazine did their cover story on Joe (20th anniversary of Surfing...) and had a whole 2-page spread on the guitars he used. It showed the 3 guitars Joe used for recording Surfing. One is a Kramer Pacer, the other two are "homemade" strats that Joe hand painted. One is multi-colored and uses an ESP body and neck, at least, according to Joe. The other is all black and uses a Boogie body and an ESP neck. The black "strat" had two pick guards with different pick-ups in each, one had two humbuckers and the other three singlecoils (like a strat). Dataduffy, the first magazine in that link (the one you're talking about) shows Joe with two guitars. The bright, multi-colored one (sorta rainbowish) is one of the ones in my magazine. The other might as well be the other home-made strat, but I can't tell, the picture is too small. Either way, i hope that helps you out, go look for the August 2007 issue of Guitar Player. I'll try to put some pictures up if I can!

Sorry, i said they were hand painted, but i was just looking at the pictures and the rainbow home-made strat is signed "R. Satriani" on the pick guard. I guess Rubina painted it??

Cheers for that drop2on,
any scans would be good as I work in China (although I'm Scottish) and finding guitar magazines where I am is next to impossible.
