Can any of you guys tell how I could a guitar sound close to Joe's on Crystal Planet? I'm referring more to what kind of amps and effects he used. I always liked that albums sound the best thanks!

Man, I nailed that tone, and the tone in Crushing Day the other day after my Boss CE-2 came in the mail...adjusted the trimpot, and I was in Satch tone territory...I'm playing through a Peavey Classic 30 with a JS 1200 (trem blocked for better sustain and tone), and also use 2 DD-3's for that "reverb-like ambience", as well as a touch of amp spring reverb. I use a BBE Sonic Maximizer pedal at the end of the chain in the effects loop, which also has the delays and CE-2 chorus in it. I have the preamp distortion at about 7 or 8 I think, and use a Boss SD-1 to push the amp (with the gain at almost nothing and the level just about maxed). Those double string tapped licks sound wicked and very authentic with this set-up. Hope this helps, at least a little bit! Don't forget to lay the treble back on the amp a bit, and boost the mids!

i really just played with the knobs and used a js-100 thrrough a Line 6 Flextone amp...pretty much gotta max the gain of any amp, use delay and dont be cheap with it, watch the treble!......heres an oldie...its close but i dont think i nailed it mind you this was recorded a few years ago

Well, max the gain on a high gain amp, not just any amp..Classic tube amps like mine (Peavey Classic 30) and Fender combos etc... don't have enough gain on their own generally to get you into that saturated liquid gain sound for leads. You may have to push the amp a bit with a good overdrive pedal...Maxed pre-amp gain will sound pretty harsh at higher volumes.

i really think that was obvious and didnt need explanation  this is the Joe Satriani Forum..id be very surprised if anyone here is using a non-high gain amp.....and if you are...shame on you.
Hey Satchmo, you seem to know alot about the guitar...do you have a website or anything?

Well from what I can tell is that there was a little too much preamp gain coming through and an OD was tightening up the sound a little too much. Giving it more "bite" than it really needs. Just my opinion on it though taking nothing away from the quality of the performance of course.

for a moment there i was thinking modeling amps where making headway...since then ive become a tube amp/jsx fan .....and thats really key if you want satch tone (tubes)....some people including myself couldnt tell the difference until i was an owner...its a never ending quest as your ear gets tuned..gl
