Title: Jsx Half Stack Or Combo Amp?
Satchaholic - March 21, 2008 11:31 PM (GMT)
I am confused as to which amp to get!
I want to get an amp that will not only give me a better sound but also be good for an apartment.
I really don't care too much about my neighbors....but I dont want to blow my windows out either!
I don't play in a band or anything, im just a solo musician who plays for the fun and love of music.
Does the combo amp sound just as good as the JSX Half Stack?
The JSX Half Stack looks so much cooler! and thats the one I always see Joe using....and I really am drawn to get that one....
What do you guys think? Right now I have a JS1200 CA and an JEM7VWH....but my amp is kinda sucky. It's a Crate GX-60...
Should I just stick with my solid state amp or move into the tube world of the JSX's?

both are equally tone worthy...prices have dropped on the combo...the half stack holds its value. Especially the cabs outrageous price...i use an XXL cab and does fine at half the price. For the future when you start playing out, youll want to have the combo...gl

Hey man, I had the same delima before I bought mine, I was worried the combo wouldn't be good, or that the half-stack wouldn't be practical for a small house like mine. I ended up just getting the stack, and man it kicks ass, if I were you, I'd go with the half-stack, it's totally worth it, plus you can show off to your friends. :P

When I was trying to decide which to get, I went with the combo. Basically for my situation being in a dorm room it was, at the time better for space.
What I did end up doing though because I also wanted that cabinet tone, is get an avatar 4x12 cabinet with celestion vintage 30's in it... Totally awesome sound. So basically I have the option of running the combo with its open backed sound, or my cab, which has a tighter sound with a good tight low end. I feel like I have a lot of tonal options that way. The crunch channel sounds REALLY cool on the combo, whereas the Ultra channel sounds better on my cabinet. Plus by having the combo, you get reverb, and the half-power switch on the back.
I also got a set of removable wheels that are for peavey cabinets, and installed them on the combo, dont know why they just dont do it this way from the factory. The thing is way too heavy for that single handle on the top.
Oh and don't worry about the combo not getting loud enough, I play it cranked to 10 all the time , and you can literally feel the sound pressure in your face. (Yes, I wear ear plugs). And the JSX sounds awesome no matter how low you play it too, its not one of those amps that you have to crank to 10 to get it to sound good. :rock2:

+1 on hackits comment.
I also have a combo. Sounds a bit different then the JSX half stack, in a positive way.

forget the reverb go for the hafl stack you'll not be dissapointed you can get a reverb pedal or the double delay pedal like I do and it sounds way nicer than reverb.

Hey,
I would try them both if you can and see which sounds best to you, which is most practical, and which is more affordable. I went with the combo. Aside from the weight, it's perfect for me. I almost never take it out of the house. Costs less than the half-stack, takes up less space than a half-stack. It has the reverb and the half power switch. They should have put wheels on it though, so I will be soon.
Good luck

I would laso like to buy a JSX, I'm thinking on getting the JSX Head and buy a 2x12 cab and opend the back, yeah yeah... why not the combo? well I do not like having the heat of the tubes and the vibration of the speakers on the same place. I've seen lot's of burned amps beacuse of this.

Maybe a quite personal question, but may I ask how u guys finance this kind of things.
When I look at a JSX head + cab Ill have to pay around 2000 euro. The JSX combo is around 1700 euro new.
Do u guys just save up money ?

Wheels on the combo are not a luxury, it is HEAVY B)
My wife tried to clean the other day but couldn't move it haha
On topic: I financed my JSX combo by selling a rare Fender (which i never played)
Saving some money is never a bad idea, there's always something you'll like.
The Satchurator for instance, it's on my wishlist
