What are your needs: style of music, club gigging? What model Marshall are you comparing to? I don't think "Classic" is a Marshall model is it?

Hi rubberducky,
I'd say that this is a personal thing so it's hard to give you advice.
For me personally it was a JSX.
Just because if I had bought a Marshall I would regret it because my dream was to have a JSX in my gear.
I have tried many Marshalls and the JSX sound a lot alike. Especially when you use the master volume the most. Then the JSX turns into a more vintage/old skool monster. If you use channel volume more cranked then it turns into a modern hi gain amp, and beyond that actually :P
I love it!
But one thing : if you decide to go for a JSX and your not going to play gigs, just for home, the JSX combo is your ideal amp, because it's capable to handle lower volumes and still sound very good.
1. 50% power switch
2. combo has open back, so this help at lower volumes. It's interesting how it sounds when you move it :)

Joe used Marshalls for over 20 years and he still uses them now and then.
Its more a personal question I think. You basically can get Satch sounds out of both amps.
JSX are pretty expensive and hard to find in the 2nd hand market, while finding good Marshalls shouldnt be any problem (though a 6100 head is almost impossible to find)
And yet again because it wears Joe`s name you pay top price, there are better amps to get for less money and equally tone worthy. The price you pay for a JSX cab is just insane ...
:)

Like I said earlier though, it's tough to make a recommendation without knowing what you are after sound wise. Since this a JS site, I guess we can make a logical assumption as to what you are after. If indeed you are after Joe's sound, your choice is pretty clear . If you want to save some coin though, any tube amp with a good clean channel will probably get close to Joe's sound with the Saturator pedal in front of it.

http://www.zip.com.au/~mayor/satriani/science_gear.htmlthis should shed some light, the old amps he used were JCM 800s and the jubliee ones live. in the studio he used so many different ones. it's hard to keep track.
the JCM 800s aren't cheap either
