Title: Plastic On Joe's Guitars

Joel_01 - April 18, 2008 12:27 AM (GMT)
hi guys,
i've been watching the live in san francisco dvd and the satriani live dvd and on some of satch's guitars he has a bit of clear plastic under his high e string. is this because he wants to stop scratches?? if so, why dosn't he have it on all of his guitars

tschommer - April 18, 2008 03:41 AM (GMT)
I think he just does this on his Chrome Boys, right?

Joel_01 - April 18, 2008 05:22 AM (GMT)
he has it on one of his black guitars as well in the satriani live dvd

Yes, I remember he was saying that he want to protect guitar from scratches.
I could understand that on his prototype Chromeboy but on the usual JS1000?

this is different type of wood around pickups. i see in youtube how someone make custom guitars. in this part they put very expencive and good resonance wood, if i find this video will drop a link...

I'm pretty sure that that guitar is a JS2PRM Chromboy. Look at the shots of the headstock, and you can clearly see the screws where the chrome plate is screwed to the headstock (to make it match the body). Also remember that it's dark and the JS2PRMs were not true chrome, but more of a dark chrome similar to the Ibanez Cosmo Black.

a different type of wood is put around the pickups usually for more sustain. I forgot the logic behind it :D

Still, the plastic thing I believe is only for pick scrapes. Anyone who watched Live in SF, can see the scrapes on some of his guitars, especially on how he plays the end of ceremony :D

smooth55 - April 27, 2008 12:55 AM (GMT)
the guitar in the video link is chrome, i imagine he has it on all his chromies

richardsim7 - April 27, 2008 09:17 AM (GMT)
Yeah I saw him live, it's chrome :P

They had so many issues with chrome staying perfect on a flexible wood. I would assume its steel but a hard plastic with a few layers of chrome could fool many and last. I would have thought a new chrome guitar would have been a nice anniversary gift. An all gold one i think could look awesome if done correctly. But the softness of wood makes it impossible. It seems the crafsmanship of guitars is long gone, chrome was never made to last, and cheapo little graphic tricks are what sells...what the hell happened? Joes original painted guitars are what the anniversary guitar should have been about. Some kind of custom inlay would have been nice. This was all an Ibanez decision is my guess, making something easy to manufacture and profit and Joe doesnt really care about fancy looking guitars, its about playing them

Yeah I could agree no more. Guitar is an instrument, not a piece of ornament XD

mouhsen - May 24, 2008 02:42 AM (GMT)
there is a website called the ibanez registry, they once showed somebody that did a JS that was covered in copper.

I was actually thinking the same thing while watching the DVD about an hour ago and thought I would check online to see why he has it.

didnt know it was black chrome... learn something new everyday

To me it looks like they have cut out the guitar put foam in side it to control the feedback from high pitches when going very close to the amps or stage monitors, they also put foam around the pickups which they showed in a podcast during the 2006 Super Collossal tour, then covered it over with a black bit of either wood or plastic possibly?

That would be more logical,
I couldn't see how a plastic plectrum would really scratch the paint of the body? After purposely trying to scratch my old guitar with a plectrum, it has no effect to the paint :S

Yes, but remember this is a Chromeboy! The chrome practically falls off if you look them, so a pick could do quite a bit of damage.

FenixBG - May 26, 2008 10:20 AM (GMT)
+3 to damage to Chromeboys
+10 to sweep skill (guitar players only)

 could not resist!

I agree with ts on that one. The fact that this is only on crhome and black pearl means something to me related with the paint. Anyone, having one of these willing to try to scratch the paint? :D

Setzer - June 2, 2008 01:17 AM (GMT)
I agree its to protect the chrome on the guitar.

I own a Chromeboy (JS10th) and the finish is increadibly easy to scratch.

Friends have had a go on it and a fingernail brushing against the chrome will put a scratch in it.

I keep meaning to make one of these clear pick guards,I had some aluminium tape on it for a while and it wasnt too bad but it was easily noticed and didnt really look the best so a clear guard would probably be the best solution, just like Joe has done.

DaniJem - June 4, 2008 11:46 PM (GMT)
hello... (sorry my english)

Joe said in a interview that he puts a 'cover plastic' on his guitars to protect them.

I read it in a old 'Guitarrist' magazine.
