Title: Help With Getting Sound
RAIN - April 18, 2008 03:33 PM (GMT)
Alright, I need help in a big way. I'm dying to try and get a sound similar (well, identical if possible) as the intro guitar has on Satch's song Overdriver from the new album.
Here is what I have to work with, so help me out in any way guys/gals.
Guitars:
Peavey Wolfgang Flame maple top/basswood body
Peavey Wolfgang Solid basswood body/top
Amp:
Peavey JSX
Pedel Effects:
Line 6 Echo Park Delay
Boss Chorus Ensemble CE-1
Boss Super Overdriver SD-1
Recording through Sonar 5
I also have Guitar Rig 2 software.
So, with the above info, anyway anyone can help me replicate that sound?

- Lots of distortion
- Lots of reverb
- Lots of delay
- Lots of tremelo hammering
Thats basically it :)

JSX:
Bass max, gain max, mid 5, treble 5. Use the amps reverb. Use the channel volume to crank, not the master volume.
PS: You forgot one thing Borg Sex:
He also gonna need Joe's fingers! ;)
Good luck with getting the tone, RAIN !

I just don't see that working. The intro to overdriver has a bit of a "slap back" at the end of each note hit. And no way it's Bass to the max because it's very sharp. I've been toying with lower bass (6) and higher treble (say 7) and mids around 3. BTW, the JSX does not have reverb...not the head that is.

turn up the presence knob.. try setting the delay for a 1 repeat in time with the track
now i gotta listen too the track again and see how close i can get

Bass should be at max always to get that creamy Joe sound. Anything less doesnt sound good imo.
Joe always have the bass set to max, only at clean channel he sets the bass to 5/6.
With bass max, mids around 4/5 and treble at 5 you still maintain a very sharp tone but with enough low end :)

Sorry about the Reverb, I'm so used of it on my JSX combo.
The slapback sound is delay indeed. I use the delay in combination with reverb to get the slapback sound.
It will make the Bass less bassier, trust me. But that is indeed the settings you have to use on the amp channels to get Joe's signature tone.
With no reverb and delay and bass at max it sounds way too dark indeed.

Yeah, I know the slapback sound is from delay, I shouldn't have said that...
I'm so fumbled by the use of so much bass. I can see that his settings always have the bass WAY up, between 9-10, AND he always has the FAT switch on. And yet when I hear myself play it's just WAY to bassy....I've been perplexed by this for so long.
I'm wondering, also, if volume is an issue (and I'm sure it is). I really can't get too loud (live in an attached home). I can really only go to Master 2 and Volume 2/3.

That is normal mate! this thing's a real monster :)
Try to set both the FX send and return to full, and then hit the fx switch!
ps: don't do it with your guitar volume wide open, you might get an heart attack from the volume. So put the volume really low first
