Description: i have messed up my 7 string...
Prestige - April 29, 2008 04:20 PM (GMT)
right so today i thought i would re string my ibanez rg 1527 (7 string). it had 9's on it, i looked in my string box, and i only had 7 string packs in 10's, so i started putting them on, i was tuning up, (tensions springs were obviously tightening) and then boom, my trem goes all wierd. i look in the back, and one of the claw screw had come out a far way. now i have a tremel-no installed, because well floating trems are getting on my nerves lately. anyway heres a pic of it:

so basicaly the thread where the claw screw has gone in, is messed up. so it wont stay in the whole (because of the tension of the bridge.
im so annoyed, iv been trying to fix it all afternoon. it just cant take the strain of the strings. 9's OR 10's....
what am i going to do? this is my pride and joy, it has my fav pick up in it, best action. its just my perfect guitar. :( help me guys...

I have had this, the hole in which the scrw was in, loses its tunnelling so it cannot grip back into the wood.
Not a great to do by your own unless specially if your asking for help, would suggest you don't know much about how to fix this so better off going to a shop like I did.
Duno how my shop done it but it looked like it was never broken when they gave it back!
I am sorry for your loss! Hope she (your guitar) recovers soon! :)

Easy fix on this one, just drill the hole out, fill the hole with wood glue and a hardwood dowel let it dry and then re-drill the original hole. If you use a maple dowel it will probably be better than new.

sir chick, how much did it cost you?
i have got SO fed up with floyd roses. the reason i baught a tremel-no was because i got fed up them. i mean i LOVE the effects you get with them, but imo they arnt worth the trouble. SO im thinking of going back to a fixed 7 string, i had an rg 7321, but sold it to get this tremelo 7 string, now im thinking of switching back, putting my dimarzio d activator in it, using my prestige neck on the 7321, and basicaly mixing up both guitars...

you don't need to drill it out, you need to put in some wood (like matches) combined with glue. so the hole becomes smaller again. Then when it will hold again.

that works. too, i do that method for strap locks and it work s fine

IMHO I would highly recommend against that method on a trem spring claw (especially on a 7 string), as Cube said, that works great for strap locks or pick guard screws though. I say just fix it right, and don't deal with it again.

im taking it to a tech, anyone got any idea howmuch it would cost, never dealt with a tech before, i know lots about guitars, but problems like this. naaaah.

Wouldn't think it would be that much not going to break the bank balance anyway. I would guess £30....but i may be way out lol. Ask if he can tell you how he would go about the repair as I would agree with the guys that for the amount of tension the strings exert it would be better to put a solid wood dowel in....whereas the strap lock only has to endure the weight of the guitar.
Each string puts on13 -15lbs of tension (5-7kg)

i think its too much tension for those 2 little screws to handle. IMO i think they should make them more heavy duty. this is a 'prestige' guitar, crafted by the japanese ibanez craftsman, i think it should be more heavy duty.
this is a very common problem on floyd roses.
