Title: Proposal: Theory Thread

PhryDom - September 6, 2005 02:58 AM (GMT)
Thanks guys!

If it's a closed thread then I'll need Eric's help!

sukotsu - September 6, 2005 01:31 PM (GMT)
Well so many sites try this and its very hard to achieve if its closed it needs to be thorough but if its open mindless chat can really bury the point of the thread.

for my two cents I think open is better as long as ppl stay on topic.

I think a cool way would be a Theory forum with a closed thread detailing the threoy that people can request to add somthing useful and then a 'sister' thread to disscuss it although that would be much more work.

Either way good luck

Meqz - September 6, 2005 02:05 PM (GMT)
what a GREAT idea ! I would be very interested in it... even tho I can't decide if make it open or closed....

Maybe as Sukotsu said, you should: have all the theory perfectly organized (better for understanding it) in one closed thread, and make another one to discuss on it, ask questions, or stuff like that. Or, if you're interested we could use the PM to discuss some of the stuff.

Well, again, great idea Phrydom!

Thanks a lot :)

I could create a pinned topic, named PhryDom's Theory Collymn for example. This topic is closed to keep it all orderly. A second pinned topic can be created to comment on the collumn or ask questions.

And Phry, you can count on my help! :)

seems like an awesome idea to DISCUSS theory because when u read... u might not get some parts of it.... but if someone is there to explain it... u could understand a whole lot more...

Drew - September 7, 2005 02:06 AM (GMT)
Phryg, I'll definitely help out where I can too, mate - when I first got into guitar, it always bothered me how little good intro theory stuff was on the net, and I'd be more than willing to help remedy that.

PhryDom - September 7, 2005 03:29 AM (GMT)
drew... you called me phryg.... do i know you....?

either way it seems our friends here don't like to vote on polls! 2 votes and 5 replies?!?!

so far it's looking like a closed thread with an open discussion thread... but let's wait a while before we do anything!

and Eric, thanks! I know I'll need you when it's time to start!

Drew - September 7, 2005 03:37 AM (GMT)
haha, no, I don't think so, actually, but I saw your name and sorta exterpolated "phrygian," and then I guess I just abbreviated it wrong,

PhryDom - September 7, 2005 05:00 AM (GMT)
many moons ago my name on satriani.com was phrygiandominant (i chose it cos it's one of joe's favourite modes ;) oh and he also posted to me a few times - my claim to fame lol) but people tended to misunderstand it, try to abbreviate it.... i shortened it to phrydom cos that's what most people called me...

maybe i'll just try and be Dave lol ;)

Eric - September 7, 2005 07:12 AM (GMT)
I voted closed thread, but I mean a closed theory topic and a accompanying discussion topic :)

If you ever want to change your name just send me a PM :P

GuitarDojo - September 7, 2005 12:01 PM (GMT)
:) I would like to contribute where I can.

Astrocreep - September 7, 2005 07:57 PM (GMT)
Either make the thread closed with a related discussion thread (with pertinant points being added to the closed thread) or have it open and have the thread trimmed a number of times.

 <_<

;)

ibanick - September 7, 2005 09:52 PM (GMT)
I'm with Astrocreep

Something else:

Is it going to be Satch Theory cause if not it should be under "General discussion"

PhryDom - September 8, 2005 01:23 AM (GMT)
that would be difficult, Ibanick... seeing as Satch theory comes under the same banner as "all theory" (well, all the theory that I know )

either way, where the thread will live is irrelevant... if it's so wrong to have the poll here go ahead and move it... i just want to know what people want! ;)

Drew - September 8, 2005 05:08 AM (GMT)
hell, I probably talked to you back then - years ago, I used to post there as, creatively enough, Drew. ;)

PhryDom - September 8, 2005 03:19 PM (GMT)
lol :)

then I might consider moving the entire theory forum to the Music and General Gear Discussions?

PhryDom - September 9, 2005 05:23 PM (GMT)
That's cool, I don't mind, as long as it appears somewhere

Astrocreep - September 10, 2005 06:00 PM (GMT)
So are you going to be starting from scratch? What will the assumed knowledge be?

PhryDom - September 11, 2005 03:25 AM (GMT)
yeah, i was pretty much going to start with something like "notes in music use the first seven letters of the alphabet", along with a big apology for the people who know more than that ;)

i have a "timetable" / schedule of sorts, but tend to not stick to it too rigidly because of the responses, results, questions, etc... i find it's better to keep it pretty open ;)

AverageJoeguitarist - September 11, 2005 11:47 AM (GMT)
Who would be adding the theory? becuase my guitar teaceher taught me the modes of the major scale his own way ( By converting them all to Natural minor) So its different... so how would this work as people learn things differently.. I would have to say you shuld have a submit your own theory lesson and have some mods verify it and submit it... :)

stewmunny - September 11, 2005 12:36 PM (GMT)
I think this is a great idea and i would go along with a closed thread but with and accompanying thread for comments/questions so that if someone goes of topic it casn be ignored if yuo choose.

Thanks

Stew

Eric - September 11, 2005 02:29 PM (GMT)
exactly :)

@ ajg: I think everybody has his own way of explaining music theory. New points of view are always welcome, aren't they?

PhryDom - September 11, 2005 03:39 PM (GMT)
yes, they are! but if everyone's going to contribute then perhaps we should ditch this poll and everyone just get posting in the general theory area...?

Eric - September 11, 2005 05:42 PM (GMT)
nah, I don't think that would endure. It may be better that one, maybe with some help of a few others, write in the locked topic. Other members can write additional parts (their points of view) in the open discussion topic. If de comments in the open discussion topic are of real good use, we can add them to the closed topic...

GuitarDojo - September 12, 2005 02:57 PM (GMT)
What about we each do our own Theory thread?

PhryDom - September 13, 2005 03:26 AM (GMT)
not a bad idea, but probably difficult for everyone to follow.... i see this thing looking like we should post what we know in the General Theory area... but then the people who are perhaps less knowledgeable than others might get lost, wondering which thread to read before another, etc...

however i would love for some kind of form, some order, to exist... that's the reason i created the poll

i personally think some of us can talk easily about pitch axis, suspensions in the bass, parallel fourths, whatever, etc, and understnsd it with no problems... but some of our other friends can't follow it (through no fault of their own)...

i wanted to create an area here where we go from knowing nothing to understanding (and discussing) some of these more involved aspects

make sense...?

Astrocreep - September 14, 2005 06:04 PM (GMT)
Totally agree with some element of direction and taking people through things step by step rather than just a mish mash of different threads with different contents...

Meqz - October 17, 2005 01:24 PM (GMT)
Hey, I think the idea of the theory thread (or subforum maybe) is really great. We shouldn't let this idea die, let's make it happen !

-Meqz

PhryDom - October 17, 2005 07:18 PM (GMT)
Meqz, thanks to people like you making a post, the thread gets remembered!!! Let's see if we can agree on the format and then we can get started :)

Eric - October 17, 2005 10:07 PM (GMT)
feel free to post your ideas or just to mail me!

Meqz - October 17, 2005 11:49 PM (GMT)
No problem PryDom, I'm pretty sure many of us could get a huge benefit from the theory thread, and would mean a lot (a lot to everyone, a lot to the forum) to materialize this idea as soon as possible.

I started study theory some months ago, like 2 or 3, so I don't know much about it, I've studied the major diatonic modes, chromatics, theory for the lead guitar (gotta study chordal stuff, but it sucks, lol). Anyway, I don't know much about theory but we could have some pretty interesting discusions in there.

Well, Eric, maybe we could start by adding a subforum here, in Techniques, Playing Styles and Music Theory, dedicated to theory/advanced theory only, and inside it, one close thread, which would only contain long, deep, interesting lessons, posted and made exclusively by user from the forum. Then there could be another sticky but open thread, made exclusively for theory requests, therefore the users posting theory would know what to post as users will be asking for specific stuff. Anyway, there could also be posts in the subforum, about discussions, or specific short answer questions, eg: the post about the Lydian Chromatic Concept (which is similar to chinese for me).

That's how it should be for me, for a start of course, as the forum gets bigger we could adapt it to our needs.

Cheers,

-Meqz

Disturbinator - October 18, 2005 02:09 PM (GMT)
thats a cool idea.. i oh so often have doubts about music theory and how to apply it and theres noone to ask cuz all the local guitar greats i know have learned by ear and dont give a shit about theory...

Meqz - October 18, 2005 07:10 PM (GMT)
Well, let's make it happen ! If everyone agrees to it, let's do it.

satchworld - October 19, 2005 04:17 PM (GMT)
open thread is better i think..;

Meqz - October 22, 2005 02:59 PM (GMT)
Hey everyone, come on, post your opinions, your expectations, let's try to get this thing active ASAP !

(Bump)

GuitarDojo - October 22, 2005 11:26 PM (GMT)
I can host- I can give each person their own FTP account and then let them add edit their own theory page thorugh my website. Then Eric can link it or we can just put the links in here. - questions can be asked from this forum. Just an Idea.

PhryDom - October 23, 2005 03:37 AM (GMT)
it's not a question of hosting, this forum is more than enough!

but thank you for the offer!

it's a question of how we do it....

Meqz - October 23, 2005 06:54 AM (GMT)
I gave an idea up there on how to make it in the forum... any idea ? any change , suggestion?...
